Meet the Author

Melanie Monteiro began her journey into the world of canine safety in 2002, after adopting the world’s most thrill-seeking, accident-prone Labrador puppy, Taiga. Since then, she’s become a certified pet first aid instructor and canine safety lecturer to countless dog parents, canine professionals and humane organizations.

A dedicated dog lover, Melanie has been a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence, a grooming crewmember for SPCA-LA, and volunteer for several other L.A. area rescue organizations. In her quest to help dogs lead safe, healthy lives, she has trained with the Emergency Care and Safety Institute, The American Red Cross and the Companion Animal Sciences Institute, where she earned a certificate in canine nutrition.

In her past life, Melanie was an award-winning advertising writer in Los Angeles. During her twenty-year career, she created campaigns for many national brands including PetSmart and Pedigree, which provided the foundation for her unique insight into the concerns of pet owners.

An L.A. native, Melanie currently lives in Sisters, Oregon, with her husband Mark, the infamous Labrador Taiga, and a constantly revolving guest roster of dogs.

    Fantastic for New and Existing Dog Owners

    This book is one of the most comprehensive books I've seen for dog owners. Safety for pets is overlooked, and unfortunately many accidents happen that can be easily avoided. Dogs are as inquisitive as toddlers, and need to be even more protected, as you cannot watch them every minute.<BR/>It is wonderful to have a reference that not only alerts you to hazards in and around your home, but how to handle any unforseen accident.<BR/><BR/>I would highly recommend this to any new or existing dog owner.

    I am on the board of directors at the santa fe humane society. This is the most comprehensive dog safety book that I have read.

    Extremely comprehensive..easy to read and the pictures of the dogs are so sweet. This is an easy read and a MUST READ for all dog owners. The spiral bound adds to the convenience of following the emergency procedures should they be necessary. It is obvious that the author is truly dedicated to dog safety....

    Great book for new and experienced dog lovers

    This is really well done. It's a must read for anyone who wants to know more about keeping dogs healthy and happy. I highly reco it for experienced dog lovers and definitely for anyone who is considering getting a dog for the first time. Pets are a responsibility and this book covers pretty much everything owners need to know - plus the writing style is excellent and the pics are great.

    The best dog care book I have ever read.

    I heard about this book from a friend and just got it. I wish I had this 10 years ago when we got our first dog!! It's organized extremely well and unlike a lot of the other dog books out there, it's written in a friendly, approachable way that makes you want to keep reading. It's just the right amount of information on a topic so you don't feel completely overwhelmed, and it's easy to find exactly what you're looking for. Thank you Melanie Monteiro for this wonderful resource.
