Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The Saint John’s Bible is intended to assist Jews, Muslims, and Christians in seeing shared commonality in the Bible. . . . In a time when people have so much to learn about different faiths, it is refreshing still to believe that experiencing the material and iconic aspects of the Bible can assist this understanding.
Catholic Biblical Quarterly

Hands down the most exciting of the books presented this year. The Gospels and Acts of the Apostles are presented in a way that literally illuminates each page with the inherent dignity and grace of the scripture. This book is not only ornate in a way the average Bible couldn’t. It is worth the price and will be cherished forever in a persona library or a house of worship.
The Catholic Press Association

The book reproductions are exquisite.
Catholic Library World

Words alone cannot describe the experience of reading and contemplating this hand-written and illuminated Bible.
Catholic Library World

An impressive achievement.
The Catholic Answer

Holding Gospels and Acts in one’s hands invites a spirit of reverence and wonder!
Prairie Messenger

The St. John's Bible is unquestionably art. And in the practice of Jackson and his team members, so is calligraphy.
Journal Star Lincoln, Nebraska

The experience of studying The Saint John's Bible has caused me to consider what happens to us when we welcome sacred words into our hearts.

Not the first in 500 years but an excellent work

This is an excellent depiction of an illuminated manuscript. Usually reproductions are fuzzy or dark and the gold does not show up well, but here they printed it well. You can see the fine detail and it shines well. They have clearly done their homework and it is an excellently printed work. As for the manuscript itself, considering the amount of work put into it, all of the scribes, illuminators and other illustrators and the research done by the Monastery, and the use of computers in the design of the project, it is a done well. I was disappointed that they only had 25 illuminations for the Gospels and Acts, given the time and the number of people working on this project, but they are just beginners so we should cut them some slack. Christopher Calderhead¿s Book, on the making of the Saint Johns Bible should be bought with this one to explain what they did and how they were doing it. If you can pick up Christopher De Hamel's books 'Illuminated manuscripts' and especially, 'The Book, A History of the Bible', both published by Phaidon, and 'Painted Prayers' by the Morgan Library, these books are excellent sources of illuminated manuscripts. These books have excellent reproductions and are your best bet short of actually seeing the manuscripts themselves. I am James Pepper and my illuminated manuscripts of the Bible are currently on display at the Museum of Biblical Arts in Dallas Texas. I have done this type of work on this scale for over 17 years, completing a New Testament in 1995 and I am currently working on a very ornate set of Gospels all by hand, without the use of computers. Since 2001 I have written 515 pages of the Gospels, with over 160 illuminations and hundreds of drawings, all by myself. I have about 1500 pages of the Bible completed and I recommend that you buy this Book. It is a great project.
