Editorial Reviews

Kirkus - Kirkus Reviews
SAVING MARS-Book One review excerpt:
Flight-obsessed Jessamyn Jaarda faces the biggest mission of her life in the fourth YA sci-fi novel from Swanson. Fired from pilot training for crashing one craft and praised for doing the same to another, Jess inspires unpredictable reactions in people. Maybe that’s because Jess lives, as she flies, by pure instinct ... A sci-fi novel that soars along with a teenage heroine whose imperfections help make her believable and endearing. Starred.

Meet the Author

Cidney Swanson is a full-time writer of Young Adult Sci-Fi and Fantasy including The Rippler Trilogy and The Saving Mars Series. SAVING MARS was named to Kirkus Reviews Best of 2012. When she’s not writing, Cidney is distracted by shiny things such as books with raised foil covers, macarons in jars, and stars set against an inky night sky. She lives in Eugene, Oregon with her husband, three kids, two cats, a dog, and entirely too much rain.

This is quite simply one of the best science fiction series that I've read in the last five years. It's filled with high-flying adventure, stellar world-building, and a spitfire heroine for the ages--and that's just on the surface. Read closer and you'll find plenty of food for thought, too. A feast for the sci-fi senses appropriate for age 10 and up.

A strong female hero in one of my favorite YA series ever! With a very interesting Mars society and culture.

How to best to describe our heroine Jessamyn? Picture a younger female Han Solo at the flight academy doing what he thinks is right when flying his ship, a little difficult with authority but a great pilot doing what needs to be done (and getting in trouble for it too) and that's probably a pretty good description of Jess's character (less fights and shooting though).

It's a bit in the future, Mars isn't in contact with Earth any more, but they still need to get some supplies. Two different societies and Jess is right in the middle of it all trying to save Mars.

Earth society has changed and not for the better and our main villain is Chancellor Lucca and she puts Cruella DeVille (from 101 Dalmations) to shame! The Chancellor is also Pavel's (Jessamyn's love interest) aunt so it makes everything a little more complicated....

The first three books of the series are in this volume.  I'm up to book 5 and cannot wait for the next one!
