    After the War

Warriors - Cry to the Stars
    Book One: After the War

    Chapter Five:
Blossomfall had four healthy kits now, Jayfeather had told Foxleap—two shekits and two toms, named Oakkit, Owlkit, Sparkkit, and Acornkit. Foxleap saw Grasspelt sitting proudly in front of the nursery, his light brown chest puffed out and his green eyes shining brightly.
The dawn patrol, which consisted of Mousewhisker, Snowfern, and Winterbreeze, had come back without any unusual news. The three toms had disappeared to their nests for some sleep, while Foxleap organized the rest of the days' patrols.
"Um, Lionblaze, you can take Cinderheart, Moletooth, and Sharkpaw to hunt up by the abandoned Twoleg nest," the russet tabby meowed, feeling uncertain about ordering the older tom around. Lionblaze just nodded his golden head, and flicked his tail to his mate, before turning off in search of Moletooth and his apprentice.
"Rosepetal, you can take a hunting patrol, too," Foxleap continued. "Take Ambershine and Bravepaw. Ivypool, Hazeltail, the two of you can take border patrols. Choose which cats you please. And Lilypatch, you can lead a third hunting patrol," Foxleap finished.
The cats went off to their duties, and the young deputy breathed a sigh of relief. Rosepetal had padded up, Ambershine and Bravepaw following her. "Should we hunt near the chesnut tree?" the dark cream shecat asked, her blue eyes narrowed. Foxleap couldn't tell what flickered in their vibrant depths, but somehow it made him feel uneasy.
"Yes, good idea," the red tabby meowed quickly. Rosepetal nodded, then padded off, Ambershine and Bravepaw following. He watched her slender figure vanish behind the brambles, and turned to find Wolfpaw standing before him.
Foxleap's apprentice was a young, dark gray tom with long, shaggy fur. His amber eyes were stretched wide with excitement, and Wolfpaw's twisted front paw stood out akwardly before him. Despite the disability, Foxleap had vowed to train Wolfpaw to the best of his abilities.
"What are we doing today?" Wolfpaw meowed excitedly, his amber eyes bright. "Battle practice?"
Foxleap nodded, and smiled at his entusiastic bounce. "Great! When are we starting?"
"As soon as you'd like!" Foxleap purred, but halted when he saw Spiderstar limping over.
"You're doing well," the black tom remarked, dipping his head slightly to the young deputy. Spiderstar's amber eyes gleamed, as he padded over towards the nursery. Probally to see Blossomfall's new litter.
Cherryfrost replaced the elderly leader, Nightpaw at her heels. The muscular shecat's ginger coat shone in the sun, and her green eyes blazed. Nightpaw's black fur shimmered, and like his fellow apprentice, blue eyes gleamed with excitement.
"Mind if we join you?" Cherryfrost asked her former mentor with a smile.
"Not at all!" Foxleap purred. Was it just him, or did he sense sadness in Cherryfrost's green gaze. She seemed distant, as if her mind was on something else.
"Ready?" Foxleap asked. The ginger shecat didn't answer for a while, but then shook herself, and meowed, "Oh, um, yes, yes. Let's go." Her green eyes wandered off as the red tom led the apprentices out of camp. With a pang of worry for his former aporentice, Foxleap wondered what was bothering her.
