More About This Book

Overview

Kaiya Marlow has always been cautious, precise in every decision she makes. When her dark past threatens to resurface, she decides to take precautions to protect herself by enrolling in self-defense classes at her gym.

Her instructor, Ryker Campbell, is the tattooed womanizer everyone warns about. Kaiya attempts to resist Ryker's advances, but the more time they spend training together, the harder it is for Kaiya to resist him.

Ryker's view on relationships is simple: strictly sex, nothing more. Haunted by demons from his past, he never allows himself to become attached to any woman. No attachment means no weakness, no vulnerability, no pain. He doesn't realize that his whole world is about to be turned upside down when Kaiya enters his self-defense class. Determined to have her, at least for one night, Ryker sets a plan into motion that will change both of their lives forever.

Will love be able to heal their scars, or are they too deep to overcome?

My one and only warning is that if you are a rape victim that can not handle reading about it, then this book is not for you. However, I have been able to move forward and reading The Scars of Us was such an emotional roller coaster but so phenomenal. Nikki Narvaez did an amazing job with this one. You can't help but feel for the characters they've all suffered heart ache of some kind that some can relate to in one way or another. Kaiya has trouble with trusting anyone and intimacy is an even bigger issue for her. Ryker isn't much different except for the fact that he's not running and hiding from it altogether, he just hides it well. I loved reading The Scars of Us because for one it shows that even though a lot of us have baggage and issues doesn't mean we can't move forward and still live our lives, we may not always get over it but we learn to manage what has happened in our pasts and we don't define ourselves to it.

    My Thoughts:

I read the Elemental Prophecy series from Nikki and enjoyed it. So I was all for reading something new from her. I don't know what I was expecting, but this story went above and beyond- it was Amazing. I get the feeling she is really starting to get into the grove with her writing. Her writing and story lines are improving with every book. I can't really talk to you about the storyline itself. There are too many things that would ruin the story for you. All I can say is WHOA! She completely blindsided me with the continual punches to my gut (pun intended). She knocked me out.....

It has taken a few days for me to write this review because I am still trying to digest what I read. It was emotionally draining and dark. I can not even imagine going through some of the things that Ky goes through in this book. To think that things like that actually could or do happen is really F'd up.

On the brighter side we are introduced to Ryker....YUM :) Even though he starts out a little bit cocky he turns out to be the sweetest guy. He is a lover....and a fighter :) Ky is one lucky lady to have him and her protective big brother Kam in her life. They are such an amazing support for her.

Basically you all NEED to go out and get your self a copy of this book. When you do feel free to chat with me about your feelings. I would love to heat what you think.

Thank you Nikki for sharing this beautifully dark and emotional story with us.

This is a great read! This is a very damaged woman, but she's helped through her pain/damage with not only her brother, but the man that becomes her lover. I have nothing negative to say about this book. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

    Good read but...

I enjoyed the storyline a lot. It deals with a very sensitive subject of incest and chronic abuse of a minor, so it may not be suitable for all readers. But it is written with extreme care and respect to victims of abuse and revolts about empowerment to overcome the physical and emotional scars. It would have been a 5 star book, if not for the disrepectful way in which all women other than the victim were portraited. It was a meat market where the guy and his friends hooked up with women for sex only and with disregard for the women. I don't have a problem with casual encounters, except when these womanizers treat and even refer to those women as whores. It disgusted me. There the 3 stars.

    Excellent

1st of all, I grew up in a loving family with nine siblings, with 5 older brothers who loved and protected me. I quit readying Adult contemporary because they were all the same, the main characters were either abandon, damaged, abused, etc. The cover of this book got my attention, so I thought would try reading it, at first when Kayai begin her story I thought, Oh no here we go again, same, same, but I kept reading because Ryker was just hot and further into the book I began to feel the emotions of Kaiya and Ryker and what had happen to them. Wow!!! Definitely not like the other Adult contemporary romance books!!! Highly Recommend!!!!

    Eh!

Can't figure out why this book has 4.5 stars. It was good but not that good. The way it jumped back and forth between the two main characters in the first person was odd. And the constant drinking and driving really started to bother me.
Its definitely worth the read but don't expect a 4.5 star story.

    Two words

I wish I could give more than 5 stars!!!! I loved the grittiness of this book. It was raw and honest. I would've loved to know what happened to the mother. A little too many defensive technique details. Hopefully we can get Kamden's story next or maybe Nori and Drew! Just a thought!
