Kaiya Marlow has always been cautious, precise in every decision she makes. When her dark past threatens to resurface, she decides to take precautions to protect herself by enrolling in self-defense classes at her gym.

Her instructor, Ryker Campbell, is the tattooed womanizer everyone warns about. Kaiya attempts to resist Ryker's advances, but the more time they spend training together, the harder it is for Kaiya to resist him.

Ryker's view on relationships is simple: strictly sex, nothing more. Haunted by demons from his past, he never allows himself to become attached to any woman. No attachment means no weakness, no vulnerability, no pain. He doesn't realize that his whole world is about to be turned upside down when Kaiya enters his self-defense class. Determined to have her, at least for one night, Ryker sets a plan into motion that will change both of their lives forever.

Will love be able to heal their scars, or are they too deep to overcome?

My one and only warning is that if you are a rape victim that can not handle reading about it, then this book is not for you. However, I have been able to move forward and reading The Scars of Us was such an emotional roller coaster but so phenomenal. Nikki Narvaez did an amazing job with this one. You can't help but feel for the characters they've all suffered heart ache of some kind that some can relate to in one way or another. Kaiya has trouble with trusting anyone and intimacy is an even bigger issue for her. Ryker isn't much different except for the fact that he's not running and hiding from it altogether, he just hides it well. I loved reading The Scars of Us because for one it shows that even though a lot of us have baggage and issues doesn't mean we can't move forward and still live our lives, we may not always get over it but we learn to manage what has happened in our pasts and we don't define ourselves to it.

The Scars of Us by Nikki Narvaez Rating: 4 Stars Blurb: Kaiya Marlow has always been cautious, precise in every decision she makes. Determined to have her, at least for one night, Ryker sets a plan into motion that will change both of their lives forever. Will love be able to heal their scars, or are they too deep to overcome? My Thoughts: I read the Elemental Prophecy series from Nikki and enjoyed it. So I was all for reading something new from her. I don't know what I was expecting, but this story went above and beyond- it was Amazing. I get the feeling she is really starting to get into the grove with her writing. Her writing and story lines are improving with every book. I can't really talk to you about the storyline itself. There are too many things that would ruin the story for you. All I can say is WHOA! She completely blindsided me with the continual punches to my gut (pun intended). She knocked me out..... It has taken a few days for me to write this review because I am still trying to digest what I read. It was emotionally draining and dark. I can not even imagine going through some of the things that Ky goes through in this book. To think that things like that actually could or do happen is really F'd up. On the brighter side we are introduced to Ryker....YUM :) Even though he starts out a little bit cocky he turns out to be the sweetest guy. He is a lover....and a fighter :) Ky is one lucky lady to have him and her protective big brother Kam in her life. They are such an amazing support for her. Basically you all NEED to go out and get your self a copy of this book. When you do feel free to chat with me about your feelings. I would love to heat what you think. Thank you Nikki for sharing this beautifully dark and emotional story with us.

Oh My GAWD!!!!!! This book is absolutely amazing like I don't even know how to put words together to express how amazing this book really is. I cried the entire time reading the end of this book. Nikki is truly has a gift that she has shared with all of us in her writing. This book is about two people who have been extremely hurt and scared by the things that have happened to them in the past, but with the help of each other they're once again able to trust and love. This is a must read for anyone who loves a great love story!!!

This story was sad, funny, sexy, and actually filled with some great info. The story was great and after the first 3 or 4% I was hooked and had to keep reading to see what was going to happen next. There were parts that felt like my heart was being ripped out and then others that it was swelling and filling with love because the way Ky's brother and Ryker were treating her. Yes there were a few mistakes here and there and at times it did bug me. There were also times when they way Kaiya was acting that also annoyed me but I think the way the character was written was very real. I thought for a minute I was going to have to go hunt down Ms. Nikki Narvaez and make her write the second book faster because I was worried about a cliffhanger but there was not one. I still want that second book NOW but I will try to be patient and wait I'm going to stop with that before I toss in a spoiler that I don't want to. Just now that it is a great book and I am looking forward to the second book to come out

I couldn't put this book down from the second I started it. I was completely tied up in this book from the very first page. Nikki Narvaez did an amazing job of bring all these characters to life. Within this book I felt everything from happy, sad, angry, humor, and everything in between and then some. Kaiya is an awesome female lead. She has suffered horribly in her childhood and does not see herself as strong or whole Ryker the male lead sounds so hot! He also has suffered in his past and to deal with it he never spends more than one night with a woman. When these two meet sparks fly and both have their eyes opened to things they were both closed off to before, but it is not all sunshine and roses for these two. There was just enough romance and angst in this book. It was a perfect mix to keep you on the edge of your seat to see what would happen with these two next. I was so sad that the book ended I just wanted it to keep going on forever. I would highly recommend this book to anyone over the age of 18.
