Overview

Telling scary stories is something people have always done. It is an old fashioned way of having a good time. Nobody tells scary stories better than Alvin Schwartz, and here, for the very first time, his three most spine-tingling books are together in one volume!

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was the first spooky addition to Alvin Schwartz's popular books on American folklore. It contains all sorts of scary stories, including traditional "jump" stories that will make your friends JUMP with fright, and age-old stories of ghosts and witches.

More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is the satisfyingly spooky sequel full of the funny, the macabre, and the fantastic. It asks all kinds of chilling questions like: Is it possible to die -- and not know it? What if a person is buried too soon? What happens to a thief foolish enough to rob a corpse?

Scary Stories 3 rounds out his collection of hair-raising tales that will make your flesh creep with more eerie stories about supernatural creatures and their strange goings-on.

Complete with Stephen Gammell's splendidly creepy and bone-chilling drawings, this collection is perfect for reading late at night -- in the dark and gloom -- if you dare!

    A childhood favorite!!!

I remember reading these stories as a child, and ever more so I remember the artwork. When I'd heard that the artwork was being redone for the 30th anniversary of the stories, I was saddened and appalled. For me, there was only one logical thing to do, find the book and get a copy before it went out of print!!! I would have bought all three separately, but the anthology was just perfect for my needs.
These stories are great! Some are bone chilling, some are frightening, and some are downright scary. There's even some funny stories thrown in there!
I remember reading these in elementary school, both in the classroom and at home. The late 80s and early 90s were a different time so I can't see these books being read in the elementary school classroom. However, being a middle school teacher in need of fresh, new ideas to help with creative writing, these books are perfect! They're scary enough to get the students thinking about writing their own scary stories and really put the chill in October.
I'd suggest this book (or the individuals) to anyone who enjoys scary stories and/or the Halloween season.

One of the greatest scary story anthologies ever

Alvin Schwartz's eerie tales combined with Stephen Gammell's disturbing paintings will have you warily looking into the dark corners of your house long after you read this book.

    Lovely, just lovely.

I, as many of my friends read these when I was a child (in elementary school, at least) and was always sort of disturbed by the illustrations with them, but now, I've come to appreciate them more. I was at Barnes and Noble today and noticed this collection, and was taken back to my childhood, and skimmed through the books once again. Very nice set of stories, some can be a tad farfetched, but most scary stories are, aren't they? I would reccommend this series as an addition to any horror story collection.

    scary, not keeping lax!!!

The most terrifiying books of them all. Stephen Gamell's drawings give it the final touch on the sypnosis, even Shwartz's theories and tales scare you.

Still creepy after all these years

I was feeling nostalgic and wanted to purchase these to reminece. Of course I was not as terrified by them as I was 20 years ago but they are still creepy stories.
This is perfect for a younger reader near 8 that is not too scared of similar topics. I think this is a classic read for any child.

These are some of the best creepy stories out there. I remember

These are some of the best creepy stories out there. I remember reading these back in the 90's when I was still a kid. These stories aren't full of terror like Stephen King but they are very entertaining and will give you goosebumps. People who have given this a bad rating obviously can't appreciate them for what they are. If they're not scary enough for you, find another author. While these stories aren't meant for very young children they are children books nontheless. The artwork in this version is very unique. Very nightmarish. The new edition that came out has different art and is better for the younger crowd. I highly recommend this collection!

My favorite book then and my favorite book now!!!!

These books were my favorite books to read when I was growing up and to have all 3 books together to me is amazing. Reading each story is like going back in time to when we could picture everything we were reading. Anyone who loved these books growing up knows what I mean so either getting this for ur self or for someone who loves scary stories this is the one to get it's funn it's scary the images in the book r spooky n funny but the best part is everytime you read them it's like reading the stories for the first time.

    Still Entertaining After Many Years

These are still some of the scariest pieces of folklore around. Schwartz did a remarkable job collecting these stories and telling them in easy-to-understand language. The illustrations by Stephen Gammell are chilling, gruesome, and haunting charcoal sketches that will stay in your mind for years afterward. The three Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books are hardly collections I would have imagined to be written for children, but I am so happy I had the original three books as a child and have been glad to get the treasury containing the three now as an adult.

My 12 year old enjoyed it.

My 12 year old seemed to really like this book. She liked the three story lines presented. I don't like scary books but it age appropriate for her and the discussions we've had about the book seemed to interest her. She has read it twice since we bought it, which was a month ago. She likes the thrill of the stories and how real some of them are/seem.

These books sucked. Does that say enough? I borrowed them from a friend and read all of the stories a few years back, and every single story was sickingly violent and not the slightest bit frightening whatsoever. Cannabalism, murder, and suicide seem to be all that these stories offer with absolutly no mystery or inrigue involved. It was purely nauseating reading this gruesome volume by a sick minded blood infatuated writer. Do not, do not do NOT let a 9 year old, or anyone for that matter, read these twisted books.
