Overview

For thousands of years, werewolves and vampires have inhabited the myths and legends of people around the world. Could it be that these nightmarish creatures are actually based on reality? Are there actual medical conditions or observable phenomena that would have led people to believe that the dead were rising from their graves to drink the blood of the living or that humans could transform into wolves? What are the facts behind the fangs? Modern science and psychology offers clues to the reality behind the myths, with case studies of real-life vampires and descriptions of medical conditions that could be the origin of the legend of the werewolf. Where science and superstition intersect, it’s hard to separate the humans from the monsters!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Della A. Yannuzzi
The mythical creatures of vampires and werewolves never seem to lose their popularity. Etingoff's book looks at the facts, myths, and legends surrounding these scary monsters. Do they really exist as some people think, or are they invented legends based on normal real world events? Are they figments of one's imagination when one is frightened by a noise, a scary film, or a moment of panic? Scientific information is offered for such irrational fear. For example, there is scientific proof that fear can be learned. Two scientists conducted an experiment on a baby white rat that eventually learned to fear other white rats. Yet, in some parts of the world, scary creatures are part of a culture, perhaps based on medical mysteries, or folklore passed down through generations. The reality is that vampires bats exist, but they won't turn you into a vampire, although their bite can cause serious illness. Diseases can also become associated with vampirism. Porphyria is an illness that causes sensitivity to light and scarring of the tissue. It can also cause teeth to appear larger and red. Did rumors of vampires begin when people came down with this illness? This book is well-researched, offering information about a subject that many children may fear or be interested in, but will shed light on misinformation about these frightening creatures. Back material includes a glossary, Internet sites, further reading, and a bibliography. Photographs are included. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi
