Throughout the 19th century, explains Campbell (history, U. of Liverpool), the coal miners enjoyed a high degree of autonomy underground, but their work situation was transformed in the 20th when Scotland became the most intensively mechanized of the British coalfields. Grievances followed, and then strikes at a rate up to 10 and 15 times higher than in English coalfields. He emphasizes the variation between the four major mining regions of Scotland, looking in detail at ten localities within them. The first of two volumes. Annotation c.
