About the Author

William Mackergo Taylor (1829-1895): Born at Kilmarnock, Scotland and subsequently attended Glasgow University and Edinburgh United Presbyterian Divinity Hall. He was pastor of three Presbyterian churches (two in Scotland and one in Liverpool, England) before transferring to America in 1872. At that time he became pastor of the Broadway Tabernacle in New York City, in which capacity he continued until 1892. — Taylor was a preacher of international reputation, a prolific writer and well-known by many for a number of biographical works on key Bible personalities. His volumes on miracles and preaching are also highly regarded and have been often reprinted. Ralph Turnbull wrote of him: “Taylor’s evangelical spirit, sound learning, constant devotion to study and running style, combined to evoke wide responses to his messages, both from those who sat under him and those who read his published works which still endure.” A contemporary records that, “He had an impressive presence and his delivery was marked by a magnetic earnestness.” Undoubtedly, one of the keys to his effectiveness as a preacher is due to his total reliance on God’s providence. His own words speak for him. “...So firm is my faith in what I may call the forerunning grace of the Spirit and the particular providence of God, that I never preach to any audience, small or great, without the conviction that I am sent with a special word for some one there. Nay, more, I am impressed with the belief that God makes the moods and feelings and the personal and domestic history of the preacher a means of preparing him to benefit his people....” (Peter The Apostle, p. 297) — Any work from the pulpit and pen of William M. Taylor is a valuable resource for the reader. Spiritual profit awaits the humble believer in every volume. — The fullest account of Taylor’s life in print is that prepared by David Campbell, pastor of Geneva Road Baptist Church, Darlington Co., Durham for the "Banner of Truth" magazine, titled “William M. Taylor: His Life and Times.”
