Overview

The Sea is a prestigious series with a history going back to the classic three volume treatise published by Wiley in 1962-1963. Now, under the leadership of Allan Robinson, the series is again being extended with five volumes currently planned that emphasize the interaction of physical, chemical and biological oceanography. These volumes will reflect the change in attitude in oceanography to a solid interdisciplinary approach.

This volume and a following volume provide a comprehensive review of the latest knowledge of the physical oceanography of the global coastal ocean. Focus is on the shelf and slope seas; landward and deep seaward interactions are dealt with only as necessary. Part I deals with fundamental dynamical and physical processes in general, such as wind-driven currents and buoyancy effects, and Part II addresses global processes and introduces interdisciplinary processes, with chapters on sediment transport and sea level change.
