The sea is a way. For the Greek seafaring of yesterday and tomorrow
I have always been interested in history, because through its course you can understand human nature in depth, in all its aspects. I am equally interested in science, as it is the "timeless aristocracy", and obviously along with philosophy and art they constitute the driving forces of human creation. Therefore, the history of Greece says that centuries ago the Greeks spread to the world and achieved greatness through seafaring. In recent years, the sea played an important role in the post-war reconstruction of the country. I knew that Mr. Simos P. Palios worthily represents this centuries-old maritime tradition, as he is probably the only one whose grandparents were captains or even shipowners. At the same time, I knew from our mutual acquaintances, such as Dr. Stamatis Krimizis –both Krimizis and Palios come from Vrontados, Chios–, about the deep admiration he has, above all, for science and scientists. When he suggested we write a book in which we talk about seafaring, Greek shipowners and shipowners –with an emphasis on their important acquaintances that Greece can and should utilize–, as well as the great scientists we have, an invaluable human capital in which the country must invest, I accepted with great joy, but also with some curiosity. I thought that he and his life could be a very precise magnifying glass that shows and clarifies something broader to us… M.P.
