Overview

Seventh grade has been surprisingly quiet for Percy Jackson. Not a single monster has set foot on his New York prep-school campus. But when an innocent game of dodgeball among Percy and his classmates turns into a death match against an ugly gang of cannibal giants, things get...well, ugly. And the unexpected arrival of his friend Annabeth brings more bad news: the magical borders that protect Camp Half-Blood have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and unless a cure is found, the only safe haven for demigods will be destroyed. In the follow-up to the wildly popular The Lightning Thief, The Graphic Novel, Percy and his friends must journey into the Sea of Monsters to save their camp. But first, Percy will discover a stunning new secret about his family--one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke. Featuring a faithful adaptation by Robert Venditti, stunning artwork by Attila Futaki, and sumptuous colors by newcomer Tamas Gaspar, Rick Riordan's blockbuster book comes to life in The Sea of Monsters, The Graphic Novel.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Gr 4-8 In this adaptation of Riordan's novel (Hyperion, 2006), Camp Half-Blood's borders have been poisoned, and Percy is off on a quest to find the healing Golden Fleece. The detailed, realistic art in full, rich color will appeal to fans of superhero comics: it is perfectly suited to the story's many action and fight scenes, none of which depict graphic violence. Fans of George O'Connor's "Olympians" series (First Second) may enjoy this similarly irreverent, action-packed view of Greek mythology. The text is succinct and witty, and there are many wordless scenes, including a few stunning pages in which Percy's friend Annabeth encounters the Sirens. Both high in quality and sure to be popular, this is a first purchase. Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library, NY—SLJ
Children's Literature - Joella Peterson
This is a graphic novel retelling of the second book in the "Percy Jackson & The Olympians" series by Rick Riordan. The story starts out with Percy Jackson and his "friend" Tyson on the last day of school where some monsters attack them. After the attack they head to Camp Half Blood where they learn that the camp's main defense (the large tree on the boarder) has been poisoned and the campers are being attacked somewhat continuously. When Clarisse is sent on a quest to find the Golden Fleece, Percy takes Annabeth and Tyson to go after her (as well as to save Grover). Although shorter than the original, this retelling is fairly consistent with Riordan's novel. The illustrations are great at combining the realistic with the fantastical. However, there are quite a few panels on each page—most of which are simple box-shaped panels—that just seem to be squished in. Perhaps this allows the story to be on fewer pages, but it also means that there is a lot to look at and read on each page (which hopefully will not deter those reluctant readers that sometimes gravitate toward graphic novels). Overall, this is a good retelling of a very popular novel and will be enjoyed by many. Reviewer: Joella Peterson
