Gr 2-5-Julia McKenzie calls forth two stories of the sea in this audio book that includes "The Sea Piper" and "The Little Sea Horse" by Helen Cresswell. The unabridged stories, originally copyrighted in 1968 and 1964, are gentle, old-fashioned tales with a touch of magic. "The Sea Piper" is much like Hamlin's piper. When the shrimp the fishermen catch disappear, a young girl makes a promise to the piper who may be the only one who can save her village. In "The Little Sea Horse," a fisherman captures a sea horse with hooves of gold. The village mayor has his plans for the tiny creature, but two children know that he must be returned to the sea. Each story is quiet, gently magical, and filled with descriptive words that bring the sea to life. McKenzie's accent and use of different voices for the characters make this an interesting listening experience. Audio quality is excellent. There is a small glitch on the first tape-the first few paragraphs from the book are read twice-but it does not detract significantly from the overall enjoyment of the production.-Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
