School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 12 Up-- From 1497 to approximately 1850, from John Cabot to Sir John Franklin, a succession of explorers sought the so-called Northwest Passage around the top of the North American continent--from Europe to Cathay. These men did a lot of sailing, sighting, and even sinking; none found the route. Herein are historical accounts of the principal searchers. Sidenotes and small black-and-white prints of period engravings and drawings (there is also a decorative center-set of seven full-color illustrations) embellish the text. The accounts are flawed, however, by a reference map that has too few place-name labels for readers to be able to follow many of the journeys. And because the text is dense with allusions, the most successful readers will be those who already have a great deal of geographical, historical, and verbal literacy. --George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield
