Overview

Claire Hansen was a keeper…

gifted—or cursed—with the job of being one of Earth's Guardians, “Summoned” to areas where anomalies existed, where rifts had opened—or had been opened. Such places were the world's danger spots where, if they weren’t sealed in time, all the minions of Hell might break through.

After she’d closed the portal into Hell at the Elysian Fields Guest House, Claire and her talking cat, Austin, found they’d acquired a new companion—Dean. Though Dean was a Bystander and shouldn’t have been allowed to even remember Keepers existed, somehow in the course of their mutual ordeal at the Elysian Fields, he’d become an indispensable part of Claire’s life. She knew she should change his memories and force him to leave her. Any other course was bound to lead to disaster. But as it turned out, it was already too late, for without Dean around Claire could easily become a danger to herself and the very fabric of space and time.

Yet with Dean around—and a little of her sister Diana’s meddling thrown in—the world was headed straight for Chaos.

And Claire was about to face a challenge beyond her wildest imagining—a catastrophe created by the power of love—when an angel and a devil each manifested in the mortal world as fully endowed teenagers, who didn’t have a clue how to handle their all-too-human bodies, raging hormones, and opposing needs to do good and evil....

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
In this second installment of Tanya Huff's Keeper's Chronicles, the pages are ripe with sexual innuendo, and the fast-paced humor will surely have you laughing out loud. I really enjoyed the exploits of poor Samuel, the lost angel who is completely confused by his unexpected male equipment. (Angels are not supposed to have gender.) His lines are without doubt the best in the book. His counterpart, the demon Byleth, is also extremely funny, as she tries to deal with well-intentioned strangers being genuinely nice to her.

Readers familiar with Huff's Summon the Keeper will find this novel a worthy successor and will undoubtedly enjoy the developments between Claire and her handsome young Bystander, Dean. Claire is a Keeper, someone who "maintains the structural integrity of the barrier between the world as most people know it and the metaphysical energy all around it." It's not an easy job -- with an angel and a demon to mess things up. (Corrina Allen)

VOYA
Once one gets used to the fact that one of Huff's goals apparently is to bewilder, it actually becomes enjoyable to be bewildered. Perhaps this enjoyment is more because Huff's wit and satire are so outrageously funny that one wants to keep reading even with no idea what is going on. For anyone who read the first book, The Second Summoning provides the thoroughly enjoyable opportunity to spend more time with Huff's delightful duo, Claire and her faithful cat-sidekick, Austin. Although the plot is not readily evident for quite a way into the novel, when it does appear, it is just unbelievable enough to swallow and laugh at simultaneously. Meet the Author

Although she left Nova Scotia at three, and has lived most of her life since in Ontario, Tanya Huff still considers herself a Maritimer. On the way to the idyllic rural existence she shares with her partner Fiona Patton, six cats, and a Chihuahua, she acquired a degree in Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson Polytechnic—an education she was happy to finally use while writing her recent Smoke novels. Of her previous twenty-three books, the five—Blood Price, Blood Trail, Blood Lines, Blood Pact, Blood Debt—featuring Henry Fitzroy, bastard son of Henry VIII, romance writer, and vampire are among the most popular.

    More fun with cats

A very delightful sequel that can be read independant of the first one (Summon the Keeper). Again, the cats steal the show. Must be willing to suspend all belief in reality except that cats really do control the world.

    Austin says read the book

The second in this series and well worth the time to read. I read this book in 2 days. Its an edge of the seat and page turner from the start. Austin the Cat is bigger and better and Claire and Dean are wonderful. The Author has a wonderful flair for plot and subplot. The Author gives you just information enough on the characters to keep you wanting to know more about them. This book and the first book in this series and highly recommended

Pay attention to HELL and don't forget to feed the cat!

OUTSTANDING read! Clear some time because when you sit down with this one you won't be able to put it down. Tanya Huff brings back her wonderful characters from 'Summon the Keeper' for the second installment as well as providing us with new subplots and a terrific story line. ENJOY!

    more from this reviewer

    Exciting satirical fantasy

She is a Keeper, a guardian on Earth, insuring the metaphysical balance stays intact. Whenever Claire Hansen is Summoned, she ventures to a spot where an opening from Hell requires closing by her. Since her last assignment, Dean a non-magical Bystander accompanies Claire even knowing what she does for a living. While they finally come together to make love, the power released is so powerful that a nearby teenager is able to brings forth the angel Samuel. He cannot return to the light because he has no earthly idea why he was called.

An unattended opening in remote Woverton grows until a female demon exits it on the mortal side and begins spreading chaos. Apparently, Byleth is Samuel¿s counterpart with both behaving like teens filled with flaming hormones and neither feel saintly or devilishly. The demon must return to Hell, but that cannot happen until the angel returns to Heaven. Keeper Diana, Claire¿s sister refuses to send back the supernatural being Samuel and wants him to stay in a place where he does not belong-or does he?.

THE SECOND SUMMONING is much lighter in tone than the first book in this series (see SUMMON THE KEEPER) as the novel is a witty parody of its predecessor. The romance between Claire and Dean makes a great subplot while Diana¿s hijinks intrigue the audience, especially the parental and grandparental boomers caught by moral dilemmas caused by someone on the side of the light. The angel-demon arc is an evolving satire different than anything the popular Tanya Huff has done before. Fantasy readers will enjoy this tale and feel summoned by Ms. Huff to become a series regular.
