Overview

Professor Ari Berk returns to reveal another trove of magical history to his avid readers: the history of the humble hobgoblin.

Known by many names, including Boggarts, Brownies, Gallybeggars, Kows, Pixies, and Tom-tumblers, hobgoblins have pervaded human folktales for centuries. In his latest collection of mysterious ancient lore, Professor Berk reveals the proper etiquette for interacting with hobgoblins, indicates their favored hiding places (crawl spaces, curtains, and even shadows), and explains the difference between this usually benevolent creature and his wicked alter ego, the goblin. The richly illustrated, faux-nonfiction volume includes special features such as several mini-booklet flaps, a gatefold, and a lavish cover with embossing and foil.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
Gathered in the pages of this delightful and informative tome is all the information one will ever need to know about hobgoblins. Throughout history these wee and often wizened creatures have inhabited homes in their quest to insure "hospitality and domestic order." Readers become privy to the Order of the Golden Quills and the Hobgoblins and learn where these creatures may be hiding in a home (hearths and cupboards are favorite places), their penchant for managing a well-kept kitchen, and the importance of their presence to a well-maintained garden. They are the makers of shoes, often dress in blue, respect your tools, are extremely loyal, befriend mice and dogs but are very wary of cats, and cherish gifts and offerings made to them. There is an ominous warning that unkindness to a hobgoblin will result in mayhem from goblins or boggarts. Every culture has references to hobs and goblins and there is much to fear from the loathsome Grendel and other guardians of the dark. Divided into easy to read sections and filled with ancient-looking drawings the world of these wee folk comes to life. Small lift-the-flap books reveal spells, blights, and a warning missive. With its' companion book about Mermaids, this specialized book will find a home with those who wish to know all the secrets of these mysterious realms. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
