Children's Literature
While playing dolls with Abby, Great-Grandma picks up a red doll shoe and tells Abby a secret. It seems that ever since she was a little girl, she always wanted a pair of red shoes. Great-Grandma then proceeds to tell Abby about all the different shoes she has worn throughout her long life; from the high-tops she wore as a little girl, to the comfy old slippers she wears now. Soon it is time for her nap, and Great-Grandma shuffles off to the guestroom while Abby goes into the kitchen to help her mother make birthday party invitations for Great-Grandma's 100th birthday. Mama taps her pencil on the table and wishes she could think of something special to do for the party. Abby whispers into her mother's ear, and the conspiracy begins. Finally, it is party day. Abby gives Great-Grandma her gift and she opens it to find a beautiful pair of red shoes. Then, one by one, the partygoers show Great-Grandma that they are all wearing red shoes too. Based on a true incident related to the author by a friend, this is a beautifully written and illustrated cross-generational story that will be enjoyed by all ages. Included is a note to parents about the importance of storytelling in helping members of one generation gain insight into the lives of the other, and suggested topics for beginning that storytelling process. 2006, GPKids, Ages 4 to 8.
