Of all the creatures in the ocean, sea horses are Echo Reef’s favorite. They’re sweet and gentle and they glide through the water so gracefully. When Echo discovers that Rocky Ridge, one of her Trident Academy classmates, has his own pet sea horse, she wants one right away. Not everyone agrees sea horses should be pets, however—perhaps they are happiest when swimming freely. But Echo thinks that if Rocky can make a sea horse happy, she can too! Can’t she?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tina Chan
Third grader Echo Reef is a mermaid whose favorite animal is the sea horse. She discovers her classmate, Rocky, has a pet sea horse named Zollie. Echo wants a pet sea horse until her sister, Crystal, tells her that sea horses should be free instead of on a leash. Echo wishes she could speak the sea horse language so she could ask Zollie. Echo is sure that Zollie does not speak the mermaid language. Echo raises the question in class of whether sea horses should be free or held captive, which gets Rocky upset. The next day, Echo’s mother, Dr. Eleanor Reef, is a guest speaker at Echo’s class. Dr. Reef runs the Conservatory for the Preservation of Sea Horses and Swordfish. She discusses both sides of the argument. The next day, Echo goes to see Zollie. She sees Rocky setting Zollie free before she rushes to school. After school, she goes to Rocky’s shell to apologize, but not before Zollie returns. Echo is happy that Zollie chose to return as Rocky’s pet. This book is an uplifting story that teaches early readers to empathize and to see both sides of a story. Reviewer: Tina Chan; Ages 6 to 9.
