Editorial Reviews

VOYA
This poignant and tender coming-of-age novel tells the story of Carly Chambers, a young teen who has just moved to Oceanside, a honky-tonk beach town on the New Jersey coast. Carly's family moves constantly, and she feels like a misfit wherever she goes. She must also bear the burden of a painful family secret: Her father is an abusive parent, and although he appears be the kindhearted owner of a local candy store, things are not as they seem. He forces Carly to go on strange errands with mysterious packages-the only times he will ever allow her to leave the house. Carly resorts to sneaking out at night, and once free, she still must be wary of a vicious bully and a strange man who wants to question her about her father's business. She is able to make friends in this new community, however, including Nick, a young boy her age who seems to have everything Carly most desires-a loving family, friends, and a stable home. The setting of the novel is beautifully portrayed-while reading, one can almost smell the salt air. The tension between Carly and her father is quite real, and most teens will identify with her struggle for independence. The suspenseful plot quietly builds, allowing the author time to finely articulate the development of each character. Fans of Cynthia Voigt's coming-of-age stories will enjoy this fine addition to the genre. From The Critics
Thirteen-year-old Carly Chambers keeps secrets. Her peers can't breech her armor of silence. No one in the resort community of Oceanside knows that her father causes the bruises she wears. And her parents have no idea that she sneaks out of her window each night to lead a second life on the balmy summer boardwalk. Carly also uncovers other people's secrets. Eddie the newsstand man has a son who doesn't know he exists. Aileen, the strange girl in the long flowing skirts, could really be a special friend. And, Nick, the popular athlete, honestly likes her. When a tall stranger follows her, and she discovers that the "candy" deliveries her father forces her to make aren't candy, and the house of cards crumbles. Carly finally musters enough strength to admit the truth, stand up to her father, and accept help from others. Recommended for ages 12 and up, The Secret Within sensitively depicts internal conflict that silences abuse victims, and shows readers the situation is escapable once the truth is revealed. 2002, Boyds Mills Press, 240 pp.,

School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-A suspenseful novel about a young teen who, with the help of some observant and caring adults and peers in her new town, extricates herself from an abusive and exploitative relationship with her father. Carly has been deliberately incurious about the errands she runs for him, the true nature of his business, and the reasons for the family's frequent, sudden moves. She chafes under his rigid rules and scrutiny, and is frightened of his violent tendencies. As the strong arm of the law extends itself, and others, including a neighbor who is a former victim of abuse, press her for explanations, she puzzles out the truth: her father is a counterfeiter, and he'll do anything to protect himself. The characters are not especially complex, but their situation is quite involving; the atmosphere and a bit of a love story keep this solid, well-paced tale moving along.-Miriam Lang Budin, Chappaqua Public Library, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    I LOVE IT!!!

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I was a little disappointed at the end when there wasn't any 'romantic' sparks between Carly and Nick. I hope this book will become a movie sometime soon. If you haven't read it, where are you in the world?
