Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This entry in the "America's Leaders" series is current up to the end of George W. Bush's first term. It describes this cabinet level job in a clear-cut format, which begins with how and why the particular job came to be. Chapters describe the responsibilities, where the secretary works, who can become a cabinet official, and several examples of former secretaries who have held the position in crises (Samuel P. Chase and Alexander Hamilton). Back matter includes an average day, a pocket sketch and photo of some who have served in this position, and a glossary. Websites, more children's books to consult, captioned full color photos (solely men), and boxed "USA Facts" also support the reader or report writer. It is a good source of information and condensed without sounding dry. Middle school readers who have already a basic understanding of American history will gain from this, but the format would appeal to other older readers who wish to learn more about the President's cabinet. 2004, Blackbirch Press, Ages 10 to 14.
