Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Maggie is delighted to attend the opening of a retro ice cream shop, but a series of mishaps sours the day. Maggie, Finn (her twin brother), Milo (her boyfriend), and Lulu (her friend) go to Sonya’s Sweets that is named after their friend, Sonya, whose mother owns the business. When Maggie tastes the just-baked strawberry rhubarb pie, her taste buds are attacked with a salty flavor. During the Sonya’s Sweets’ opening, someone shatters the shop window and Maggie finds a threatening note on the shop floor. She is determined to look into the matter along with finding out the about the ghost at the Chocolate Mansion. Caroline and Lisa hire Maggie to babysit their son, Beckett. While babysitting, Beckett tells Maggie that the ghost visits him. Maggie uncovers the truths behind the ice shop mishaps and the ghostly encounters. Readers who enjoy mysteries where secrets are revealed will probably like to read this book along with others in the “Maggie Brooklyn Mystery” series. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung; Ages 11 to 13.

Gr 4–6—Maggie Brooklyn, dog walker and sleuth extraordinaire, adds babysitter to her résumé in this action-packed story that involves two mysteries. On the day of the grand opening of her friend's mother's old-fashioned soda shop, everything goes wrong. At first, it seems coincidental, but when Maggie finds a note stating, "Take your cookies elsewhere," she realizes that someone is out to sabotage the business, and she is determined to find out who. Meanwhile, Maggie stumbles upon another mystery during her first babysitting job. Is Beckett, her young charge, really seeing a ghost? After some sleuthing, Maggie figures out what is frightening him. The mysteries are cleverly interwoven throughout the narrative as the protagonist deals with both friend and boyfriend drama. Maggie is smart and witty, with an inquisitive mind. Secondary characters are well developed, and there are a lot of surprises and twists throughout the story. A solid choice for mystery fans.—Megan McGinnis, Sachem Public Library, Holbrook, NY

The Maggie Brooklyn Mystery series is a light and fun collection

The Maggie Brooklyn Mystery series is a light and fun collection of books for middle grade readers. While nothing in the book is very heavy or dark, kids are treated to a mystery (or two) complete with clues, interrogations, and problem solving. Maggie is a sweet girl and she makes a wonderful heroine for this series.

This particular book is much like the others in the series in that we get to see a bit of Maggie's social life, a teensy bit of her school life, and quite a bit of her after-school working life. Light is shed on each of the mysteries throughout the book as Maggie meets new people and makes connections. Some clues are blatantly obvious, while others are less so. It's a quick and easy read that kids will enjoy. While the book is part of a series, it can be read in its own.
