Overview

Volume three of Deutsche Grammophon's Segovia Collection presents an interesting variety of Spanish music that was originally recorded in the 1950s and 1960s. The works performed span several centuries of Spanish music, from the late Renaissance (Luis de Milán) to modern times (Albéniz and Enrique Granados). Segovia never hesitated to play transcriptions, and many of his performances of pieces originally written for violin or cello -- such as Bach's suites and partitas -- reveal extraordinary sonorities and new musical insights. Such is his rendition of "Pavanes (6)" from Milán's "Libro de musica de vihuela de mano intitulado El maestro." Written for the vihuela, the ancestor of the modern guitar, these pieces retain, in Segovia's hands, their original majesty and simplicity, conjuring up the distant world of sixteenth century Spain. From the mysterious atmosphere of Milán's music, Segovia makes an effortless transition to the elegance and charm of Fernando Sor's minuets and etudes for solo guitar. Sor's guitar music embodies the suave aspect of this multi-faceted instrument, and Segovia plays Sor with an extraordinary sense of balance and measure, beautifully emphasizing Sor's fluid melodiousness. The modern pieces on this disc include compositions by Albéniz and Granados. Granados' "Andaluza" from "Danza espanola" is an exceptional treat. Although written for piano, the "Andaluza" is better known as a guitar piece. Playing his own arrangement, Segovia, a Spaniard who defined himself as Andalusian, captured the timeless, soulful, and melancholy passion of this extraordinary composition.
