The Self Sufficient Home by Nancy Hoffman is an excellent book for anyone who aspires to make the transition from normal everyday life to leading a healthier lifestyle, protecting the environment, and saving money “off the grid”. Hoffman, throughout the book, offers great insight into the realm of self sufficient living; she discusses the transition period and how to succeed in the lifestyle in great detail, then also expands to discuss the individually important aspects attributed the style of living. These aspects include growing fresh produce and composting, raising your own stock, preserving and canning harvests, and administering first aid to yourself or your family. After reading this book completely, I feel assured and competent enough to attempt the transition from normal every day life to a self sufficient and self dependent lifestyle. Hoffman elaborates diligently, leaving nothing out, when it comes to the necessary fundamentals of a self sufficient life style. Bee keeping, harvesting water, and pest control are all essential parts of the self sufficient lifestyle that with out Hoffman’s attention to critically important details, I most likely would not have even considered. Retrospectively thinking, Hoffman discussed many important attributes to the self sufficient life style that would have otherwise gone right over my head. Many aspects of the self sufficient life style are easier said than done, Hoffman however does an excellent job of instilling simplicity and reassurance into her explanations. The transition from normal life to self sufficiency is, on a day-to-day basis, very difficult and physically trying in nature. If you’re a person who is interested in becoming exposed to what it takes to accept the challenge of a self sufficient life style, this book is all you will need. Hoffman, all in all, does an exemplary job of not only explaining but also simplifying the transition from your current lifestyle to an independent life “off the grid”.
