Overview

In the fifth book of the multi-author Sundering series, New York Times best-selling author Troy Denning sends an embittered paladin, Kleef Kenric, on a quest to stop evil forces from taking advantage of the chaos rolling across the land of Faerûn and claiming dominion over the entirety of the Realms.

Stubbornly clinging to his family’s worship of a long-forgotten god, Kleef Kenric soon discovers that his god has blessed him with divine gifts, making him one of a new group of Chosen cropping up around the Realms. This divine gift makes him an excellent ally—and a target for those who wish corral his powers.

After battling his way out Marsember, a city besieged on all sides in the wake of the Sundering, he becomes swept up in the mission of a group of odd allies—a warrior noblewoman, an accomplished thief, and a mysterious short pudgy man exuding a faint odor of decay. With the forces of Shade tracking their every step, they travel to the Underdark to thwart the rise of the goddess of Death, but before long Kleef learns that his allies hide dangerous secrets—secrets that could destroy not only Kleef but the very fabric of the Forgotten Realms.

    great new characters

I really liked this book and the characters but I wish it was longer. the end really needed to be fleshed out more. I'm not even sure what happened. hopefully there is more books and maybe that will be explained

    Hard To Put Down!!!

I personally enjoyed this book. I found it to be a real page turner. It was fast paced and full of action from the very beginning. I loved the way the author told the story. The main charachters were likable and interesting. I would hope a series could be developed based on this book.

Advances the Events of the Sundering, but not a fantastic standalone

I will keep spoilers out of this review.

I started out with this book and was very interested in the characters. It was interested to learn about the backstory of Kleef and Arietta. To see the inner turmoil of a man who is having trouble keeping his faith in a dead god, and a woman's inner struggle about what nobility should be and the actions of the nobles around her. And there is action to kick off the story quickly.

Then the story seems to have the issue that Godborn had. Godborn was originally planned as 3 books, and seemed to be rushed, and this book feels rushed all throughout the middle as well. The Character Joelle is a chosen of Sune claiming the power of love, but really the story just makes it seem as if she has the power of quick lust, and the "love" in the story seems a fickle thing. I think the relationships between the 4 main characters could have led to a lot more development, but needed more time.

Some battles seemed a little quick as well. I think the Shadovar are very interesting enemies and could make for very interesting combat like at the start of the book, but after awhile it's a bit of the same.

The ending was good. You get to see some of the ramifacations of the Sundering Events. But some of the details as to how Shar is moving such significant events without difficulty are confusing.

So I liked the book. Wished for some better details and character development, and hope any future novels are more like when he wrote The Return of the Archwizards.

Still a 'hack' when it comes to the Realms...Please stick to Star Wars!

I didn't like it when Troy would write Realms-shaking event material back in the day. I felt his understanding of the Forgotten Realms was rudimentary. Consequently he was the proverbial bull in the china shop, knocking things when another writer would have a more nuanced style.  I decided to give him another chance after he spent time away, perfecting his craft elsewhere (Star Wars, etc etc.)...Sad to say, Denning's work has not improved. If anything, I look at his books as a great example for how NOT to write. Too many assumptions, too many 'jumps'. This book made me think he wrote the manuscript ad was told, "Hey, you forgot to add this and that in there for the readers to discover X is coming back or whatever. It's ham-handed. I hope Denning goes back to (hacking) other people's fantasy worlds instead of the Realms. Hands off, bub. Quit killing our dreams. (BTW WotC, that is so idiotic, to say that the Underchasm will get 'filled up' by Grumbar perpetually creating dirt in *******'s temple. Or was that Troy's idea? Either way, LAME.)

OK folks...  (And if the AUTHOR sees this maybe HE can clear this up!)  But this book and the new DRIZZT novels have LESBIAN characters in them!!!  (I know... *GASP*  if any of the other books have MALE homosexual characters I will be GLAD to retract this...  If you're ONLY including "GIRL ON GIRL" this looks like a REALLY CHEAP attempt (In a series that has had VERY LITTLE in the way of RISQUE behavior) to give ADOLESCENT MALES a "CHEAP THRILLS"!!!
