Meet the Author

Written by a passionate stitcher and teacher, with her own sewing school, eager to produce a one-stop sewing bible for her students, this book leaves no hem unturned. You can dip in at any level - whether you're new to sewing or refining your art, whether you want to repair an old skirt or create a new one, whether you want to spruce up a curtain or design one from scratch. And with a Foreword by U.S. sewing teacher, Diana Rupp, this book has it all sewn up.

Good To Know

In our interview, Smith shared some fun facts about herself:

"I love oysters! I will only eat them raw. Last summer my friends and I rented a house for a week on Long Island. We bought an oyster knife and fresh oysters from the local fisherman and learned to shuck them ourselves. Then we had an oyster eating contest. I ate 30 in one sitting."

"The current song with which I am obsessed: Rod Stewart's Maggie May. Yes, you heard right, Rod Stewart. Listen to it -- it's a good song -- great lyrics. And the mandolin at the end -- lovely."

"When I am completely stuck with a piece of writing, I like to try standing on my head and talking myself through it. There is something about being upside down that can help me shift into a new mode."

"When I was in grade school I wanted to be a farmer so that I could hang out with the livestock. When I was in high school I wanted to be a cemeterologist so that I could hang out in Mount Hope Cemetery all day taking rubbings of gravestones. When I was in college, I though that I would be a teacher -- in order to do something useful with my life. I thought being a writer was too self-indulgent."

Best Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Sewing Techniques

I have been looking for a comprehensive "how-to" encyclopedia of basic sewing techniques for a long time. This book covers every technique you could possibly want to know if you are new to sewing or if you've been sewing for years. It is so hard to find good instructions for inserting an invisible zipper, altering a pattern or lining a dress. If you're just learning to sew, this book is a must have. If you've been sewing for years, you'll find that the instructions included in this book simplify even the most challenging techniques. This is the best sewing book I've ever seen and, believe me, I've looked through tons trying to find the type of information included in this book. You will not be disappointed if you purchase this book.

If you only have one sewing reference book this should be it!

I have been sewing for more than 50 years and got this book as a reference. It has not let me down yet; every time I have looked for information I have found it easily. The instructions are clear and easily understood. However, I don't know that I would recommend it for a new sewer. The amount of information could prove to be overwhelming for a beginner. Conversely, anyone who knows the basics will find this book a must have in their sewing library.

NOT the best choice for a beginner

I purchase this book for my granddaughter which is just beginning to sew. Thought it would be good based on reviews for beginners -- but certainly NOT the best choice for beginners. I've been sewing for over 30 years and I've even had to do a double take on some of instructions presented. Some instructions are much more complicated than they need to be! It may be good for a reference due to the pictures, but not the main sewing book.

    Very good

This book is great if you want to learn the correct and professional techniques of sewing instead of the easy, cheap way.

    Excellent reference book

This book gave great details on sewing. It is a step-by-step learning tool for the beginner to the experienced. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking of learning to sew or use as a refresher course.

    Great reference sewing book

This book covers a lot of techniques and provides a series of pictures to accompany them. I own the prior version of this book but this one added great value to my personal sewing library. It is costly though.
