Overview

It was our home away from home. It was a gathering point, a place to go when there was nowhere else to go. If you wanted to find a friend, the first place to look was The Shack...What is "normal"? And how does the past affect the present? In his early teen years, Tommy Carter's family falls apart. He finds something with his friends that he can't find with his family; he discovers that peace of mind is found at the bottom of a bottle, even if only temporarily. Everyone drinks at the age of fourteen, right?

It's the late 1960s, and the world appears to be coming apart at the seams. Politicians continue to be assassinated, and the United States becomes embroiled in yet another war. The lives of four boys in a small Midwestern town mimic the turbulent times as their worlds crumble around them. Tommy and his friends (Jake, Mitch, and Ralphie) find that to survive, they must rely on each other--and alcohol.

The Shack is a first-person account of families destroyed and youth interrupted--of troubled times when a family history of alcoholism can affect lives in ways that are understood only many years later. It's a story of dysfunction, friendship, addiction, redemption, and eventual forgiveness.

    Review of The Shack

I loved this book and found many portions well worth writing down so that I will never forget them. I've bought the book for a friend and recommend it to everyone I can. It is unforgettable!

    Haunting and powerful

A short but powerful novel. Disturbing childhood images but in the end we're reminded that forgiveness is the key to happiness.

Most amazing book I have read in Awhile

I was so moved by this book. It read it at a time in my life when i needed to see and feel a tangible loving, merciful God. Boy did i recieve that from this book. It blew me out of the water. It will always be dear to me for that reason.

    Depressing

Unless you come from a back ground of alcoholic parents that beat you and you in turn turn into an alcoholic I don't see why anyone would want to read this. I heard through the "grapevine" that it was a great book was why I ordered it. Next time I'll check it out for myself and not trust the "grapevine".

    Life in Review

The Shack is a wonderful, provocative book, stimulating the reader to review the meaning of life, love and the human relationship with God. It is a great story. It is also flawed here and there. Any author who, even in fiction, implies a divine disdain for religion, institutions, and rules, is forgetting that without them he, himself, would have no knowledge of, or relation to the Triune God he so obviously loves. We are all deeply indebted to those, especially the Roman Catholic Church, who, however haltingly and flawed, kept alive and passed down through the centuries the One who enlivens us now.

    Do not buy!

    The Shack was very depressing.
I usually pass my books on others. This one made it to the trash can.

    Eh

After years of purposely avoiding this book, I finally read it. I'm not sure why it got rave reviews or caused a controversy. I was not impressed.

Loved it! Good story about relating to God. Easier than most think it is. He wants to be friends with us and our Pa pa!
