With his mysterious past and powers, his aesthete's sensibility and wit, and his love for his adopted home, Opal City, the unpredictable, immortal villain-turned-antihero the Shade was one of the most fascinating characters in Robinson's wonderful Eisner Award-winning "Starman" series. In Robinson's return to the character, collected in its entirety here, the Shade, having fallen in love with policewoman Hope O'Dare and forsworn crime, is drawn out of an autumn funk when Deathstroke the Terminator attempts to kill him. Learning that the assassin is linked to his own dying great-grandson, the Shade embarks on a quest for the truth. His journey takes him to Australia (where he battles an Aboriginal creation spirit) and Spain (where he aids local vampire heroine Le Sangre who calls him "father") before landing him in London where he gained his shadow-based powers in 1838. VERDICT Robinson's many artist collaborators, including Darwyn Cooke, Jill Thompson, and Gene Ha, bring a great deal of style and verve to this colorful yet dark tale that is at heart, like "Starman," about family. James Robinson is an acclaimed, award-winning writer whose works include STARMAN, SUPERMAN and JSA: THE GOLDEN AGE. He was co-writer with Matt Wagner on SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE and co-wrote HAWKMAN with Geoff Johns. In addition, he wrote the screenplay to THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, starring Sean Connery, and created the acclaimed young readers comic series LEAVE IT TO CHANCE. He is currently writing EARTH 2 and DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS.

    I loved this graphic novel. I read this twice in a row because I loved it so much the first time. Its a huge book as well. To anyone who loves Batman/Superman/Justice League or is looking for a graphic novel for someone who loves that stuff I should highly suggest The Shade as a present. Two thumbs up, five stars.
