Jaron, irascible, incorrigible king of Carthya, faces the loss of his kingdom, his friends and his life in the gripping finale of the Ascendance Trilogy. Fresh from his foray to the pirates in The Runaway King (2013), Jaron learns than King Vargan of Avenia and allies from Gelyn and Mendenwal have invaded Carthya and captured Jaron's friend Imogen. Determined to save Imogen, Jaron attempts a rescue and fails, leaving him a prisoner and Imogen presumed dead. As he tries to cope with Imogen's death, captive Jaron discovers how much he loved her. Relying on the skills of lying, stealing and deceiving he honed as a child, Jaron outwits his captors and returns to Carthya to rally his outnumbered troops. Resolved to save Carthya, Jaron devises a series of improbable, dangerous and ingenious plans designed to surprise his enemies as well as readers. Through his self-reflective, first-person narration, Jaron confesses friendship and love have greater power to wound him than villains, plots and enemies. In the end, friendship and love win out, as Jaron and his loyal friends confront their foes to determine Carthya's future in a harrowing conclusion. From one cliffhanging episode to the next, wily Jaron's rebellious, undisciplined spirit carries the day as he battles to save everything he holds dear. (map) (Adventure. 10-14)

I am really excited for this book to come out. The first 2 were amazing. I love Jaron's wit, humor, and strength. I also like that there is not to much romance that makes the bokk boring. Instead there is lots of action and sword fights! If you haven't read this series you should really give it a try. I think any middle school aged kid will like this, even if you don't like reading. Sostop reading this review and go buy the False Prince!

I LOVE all three of these books so much, and they're well worth more than just $10! I loved every twist and turn, and loved everything about Jaron. This was definitely a perfect ending to the trilogy and I was very sad for it to have come to an end. But completely satisfied with the three wonderful gifts Jennifer Nielsen has given to us all! I know I will continue to read those gifts again and again. I cannot even begin to describe how well written and stunning this trilogy has been! Lastly, but most importantly, I love the messages she has put into these books, To always do what is right and by doing that we will see that doing the right thing will always, always prevail in the end. Yes it is hard, extremely difficult and faced with many challenges, but we've got to keep the strength and never bow to bitterness and hate. Perfectly true, I don't think anybody could have said it better! Thank you Jennifer Nielsen!!!!!!!! Please keep writing!!!!

A wonderful end to the trilogy. Love, love, love!! The only thing that would have made this better...if I hadn't had to wait for it to come out. Keeps you hooked until the end, twist and turns.

With Carthya on the brink of war and his love Imogen captured by the enemy, King Jaron must decide between what is best for the country and what his heart tells him to do. Can either be saved? Even with his infamous scheming and the loyalty of his people, Jaraon doubts he will be able to keep Carthya from being taken over by the armies of neighboring countries. He may not even be able to save himself or the ones he loves.  The Shadow Throne is Jennifer A. Nielson's thrilling conclusion to the Ascendance Trilogy. As masterfully plotted as the first two books and with coy Jaron as narrator, The Shadow Throne kept me guessing what would happen right until the very end. Jaron proves to be as unreliable as always as a narrator, but I still love him and he never fails to surprise me. A fabulous fantasy series! I can't wait to see what the author's next work is.

This book is adventurous with some twists and turns. In this book Jaron retraces some of his steps from the last book, The Runaway King. This book is still about King Jaron, Princess Amarinda, Tobias, Mott, Roden, Fink, and Imogen. In this book you are introduced to new characters too. Carthya is now at war and it isn’t pleasant. But Jaron has a plan. He asks Amarinda, Tobias, and Fink to go to Bymar and ask for their help. As the three of them are doing that, Jaron sends out his armies to hold back the armies from Drilliad, Carthya’s capitol. I really liked this book because of its twists and turns. I liked how Jennifer A. Nielsen made me believe one thing then have it turn out different. I thought I would like this book before I read it and I still do like it. This book is just as awesome as the first two books. I would recommend this book for middle-schoolers.

Read April 2014 5 Stars My Review: What a fantastic end to this fun trilogy!  If you enjoyed the other 2 books then you won't be disappointed with this one.  The story continues with the same feel as the other books.  Jaron is snarky, brave, makes mistakes, and fools you with what he is doing.  The secondary characters continue to develop and I enjoyed seeing them grow in their own ways, especially Roden. This is a satisfying conclusion.   Warnings: None I would let my 16 year old read this book.  In fact, my 13 year old read the book before me and she loved it.
