Overview

My first novel of the Chinese Circles series, is The Shanghai Circle

‘Triad meets Taipan in pre-war Shanghai’, as my copy-writer daughter describes it in as few words as possible.

It’s 1936, and Shanghai, the sixth largest city in the world, and ‘Paris of the East’, is under threat by the Japanese invasion of China and the rise of Communism.

With Europe in its own torment, nobody would protect the Western settlements as thousands of refugees converge on the city to escape the advancing armies.

Charles and Davina Guest of a British Trading House, Cheung Pak-ho leader of the Sung Triad Society with his son Joseph, and Irina a young beautiful stateless Russian woman, have different backgrounds, lifestyles and moral beliefs.

What would they do, where would they go, what sacrifices would need to be made by them, their families and those who depended upon them?

Mammoth changes are tackled, natural and man-made disasters faced, and unbelievable cruelty goes hand in hand with unlikely passions, as the families find their lives are circling each other in a radically changing and dangerous world.

It’s a novel written around historical events by someone who lived in the East for ten years, among six million Chinese, who saw typhoons, the colonial life style and the noise, smells, characters and excitement of that magical part of the world.

OK that’s the blurb, and an outline of the story.

If it’s of interest, try a sample.

Meet the Author

Born and raised near London, I’ve lived half my life overseas since leaving home as a teenager.Initially a reluctant accountant, I soon moved professions and developed into being a designer and implementer of computer systems. This career took me to various countries in Europe and ten years in Hong Kong before I retired in 1999.My wife Jo and I live in a 150-year-old finca in the small village of Jesus Pobre in Spain, a pueblo most Spaniards have never heard of. We ran a successful internet real estate business for eight years but when the property recession hit Spain we looked for other interests. Jo choose art and improving her Spanish. I decided to trace my ancestors. After spending a year exploring my ancestry with some surprising results, as can be found on my web site, I decided to write. First short stories. Then novels.
