Children in primary colored, mixed-media spreads create the very scenes that they inhabit, using large crayons to draw various shapes that form everything from a city of brick skyscrapers to a sunny beach where Sim’s naïf figures ride a purple waterslide. A jazzy song by the children’s musical group SteveSongs describes the children’s drawings and the shapes that they use to create specific images: “I drew a party in the park,/ The DJ was a monkey,/ Everybody there was dancing,/ But no one was as funky... as the lion,/ line, circle, circle, square, square, square, square, triangle, triangle.” The shape-focused chorus, bouncy verses, and whimsical storytelling should have kids singing along with the included CD recording, which also features a video animation of the story. Ages 4–7. (Nov.)

PreS-Gr 2—Roslonek, songwriter, musician, and creator of SteveSongs, has put his original tune into book form. "The Shape Song" is described as a swing along, and it does really swing when used with the accompanying CD. The idea is that everyone who creates something, whether at work, play, art, or music, begins with the basic shapes of line, circle, square, and triangle. The action follows four children who draw objects using shapes, including skyscrapers, cars, boats, and a party in the park. As Roslonek demonstrates the shapes with his body in the video CD, children will find themselves singing along with the catchy melody and receiving reinforcement of the basic concepts. The vibrant illustrations created in gouache, acrylics, and pastels are full of detail and motion. The song and book end with the idea that everyone makes shapes in the day but also in the night when they dream. Children will soon add The Shape Song to their list of favorites and will begin to see the world in a new way. They will also be inspired to make their own creations using what they've learned.—Diane Antezzo, Ridgefield Library, CT
Kirkus Reviews
The catchy shape song that many will recognize from PBS Kids gets some new verses and some brilliantly colored artwork in this collaboration from SteveSongs and Sim. Bouncy rhythms and rhymes are sure to get kids singing, and their fingers will itch to draw: "I drew boats out on the water, / I drew a castle on the sand, / I drew a beachside waterslide, / Oh, what a ride! / And I never even had to stand / in line, line, circle, circle, / square, square, square, square, / triangle, triangle…" The premise is that most artwork starts with basic shapes: line, circle, square and triangle. Armed with these four shapes, the things that kids can draw are countless. Sim nicely demonstrates this in his double-page spreads. His busy scenes are full of the four featured shapes, naturally drawing readers' eyes to them by their placement and color. But he includes other shapes as well: rectangles, ovals and semicircles. As in the PBS Kids video, the illustrations include four multiethnic kids, but here one of them wears a leg brace as well. Quirky, blocky animals that incorporate at least one of the shapes in their body and/or body language also populate Sim's world. An enhanced CD (not seen) with the song and video is included. Break out the crayons and markers, and put on some dancing shoes--this is sure to inspire on many levels. (Picture book. 2-5)
