Overview

After Eirik the Red was banished from Norway and then Iceland for murders, he colonized Greenland. His son Leif the Lucky went on to build an outpost in Newfoundland. Both of those ventures ended in failure. This historical novel explores why, alternating chapters between the Viking Age and modern excavations of Norse sites in Iceland, Greenland, and America.

About the Author

The author of eight novels and more than a dozen nonfiction books, Sullivan completed his B.A. degree in English at Cornell University, studied linguistics at Germany's Heidelberg University, and earned an M.A. in German at the University of Oregon. He reads in nine languages, including Danish and Norwegian. He undertook ten voyages to Scandinavia while researching Norse sagas and Viking history for the four historical novels in the Viking Saga series. The first, "The Ship in the Hill" covers the start of the Viking Age in Norway. The second, "The Ship in the Sand," deals with the Danish Vikings who conquered England. The third, "The Ship in the Woods," describes the Swedish Vikings who conquered Russia and founded Ukraine. Each book alternates chapters between the Viking Age and actual modern archeological excavations of Norse settlements and ships.
