Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
The sixth grade is about to put on its class play: The Wizard of Oz. In a refreshing change from most school play stories, Ellie does not yearn for a starring role in the show, but harbors ambitions instead to be the set designer, until her clever plan for staging the yellow brick road lands her the even grander role of stage manager. Ellie is thrilled until she discovers that she doesn't have the authority to cast her best friend, Mo, as Dorothy, despite her previous promises to the contrary. When Mo (who cannot sing a lick) is instead cast as the Wicked Witch of the West, the friendship seems irreparably damaged. The stage manager's creed may well be "If it can't be fixed with duct tape, it's too big a problem for the stage manager," but some problems, Ellie begins to fear, simply can't be fixed at all. In a heavily illustrated, handwritten diary format clearly inspired by the "Wimpy Kid" series, Ellie relates the trials and tribulations of a novice stage manager with a pleasing blend of humor and pathos; the plausible peer dynamics are satisfyingly resolved. Best bonus: an engagingly detailed behind-the-scenes look at the fascinating details involved in mounting a major stage production . Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
