By Jon Burcaw

Life is filled with challenges. You can let them overtake you or you can get ready for the next cool thing to happen. The choice is yours.

Award-winning writer Jon Burcaw, in this, his first book, brings together the unique worlds of wheelchairs and motorcycles. He draws on his own life experiences as an avid motorcycle enthusiast and father of a profoundly disabled child to weave an inspirational tale for young adults.

Eight-year-old TJ, a wheelchair-bound boy, anxiously waits to take the ride of his life in a very special machine during his first Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) summer camp experience. Befriended by a seasoned group of boys at the camp, all with similar disabilities, TJ learns about the amazing trip that lies ahead of him.

But a dangerous storm threatens to ruin the day. Unknown to him, an intrepid group of motorcycle riders responsible for making the special ride happen, are caught in the same storm. As the camp prepares for the worst, the riders soldier on against all odds.

Through great storytelling and clear imagery, this book challenges commonly held stereotypes of bikers and the handicapped as well. At the conclusion of the book is a list Questions to Ponder that will provide group discussion opportunities.

A 1983 graduate of Moravian College, Burcaw published his first piece in the MDA's Quest magazine in 2008. It earned the 2009 Communicator Award of Distinction presented by the International Academy of the Visual Arts.

A fundraising champion for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Burcaw has raised over $120,000 for the cause since 2001. He is pledging a portion of the proceeds of each book to MDA research. He resides in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with his wife and two children.

The author deals with children with difficult medical issues but shows the reader that the child is not defined by the disability. The characters are strong and inspiring. Keep them coming! What happens next?

This is one special book about special kids and special adults and special machines all in a very special place. All inspire the reader to the fullest. I would say this is a book to pass around, but don't. Buy several copies and give them away. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Muscular Dystrophy Association research fund.

Although fiction, it depicts the true challenges faced by kids with Muscular Dystrophy and their day to day struggles as well as their hopes and dreams. The Sidecar Kings are a group of MDA campers who have chosen that name because of their love of motorcycles. The story brings to the forefront a group of Harley Riders who put aside their own discomforts traveling in bad weather in order to reach the MDA camp to provide those long anticipated sidecar rides.

What a charming story! In a compact volume, The Side Car Kings evokes adventure, suspense, compassion, joy and, above all else, hopefulness. It's delightful. Appropriate for all audiences, I suspect it might be especially appealing to independent readers in the upper elementary grades. In fact, I'll be passing along copies to some teachers I know.

The Sidecar Kings enlightens us and allows us a peak into the hearts and minds of these very special children who refuse to let their physical limitations hold them back. They feel, breathe, and ache just like the rest of us. Burcaw's portrayal of their emotions at camp - something so many of us have experienced - remind us that there is very little that separates perfectly healthy kids from those suffering with a debilitating disease. We all struggle with something, yet we can all learn from the MDA kids emotional temerity, determination and unbridled joy. And still, we are reminded to treasure the simple things that we so often forget to appreciate or take for granted - like taking a ride on a motorcycle.

Jon Burcaw has a gift for engaging and inspiring his reader with his words. The language and style are perfect for the story, and the imagery is so vivid that I felt like I was right there with the campers. He's truly created a window into the world of these amazing young boys, and he's shared a valuable lesson about challenges and not letting those challenges hold you back. This book is a perfect gift for the young reader in your life, and a great story for adults too!

As a MDA Summer Camp Counselor, for 8 years. I can not recommend this book highly enough. Everyone should read it, from kids to adults. This book should be required reading in schools. This story is well developed, well thought out and best of all, written from the heart. Congratulations Jon on a first rate book!

This story in intergenerational and transcends the worlds of the handicapped and the non-handicapped. It breaks through stereotypes of the handicapped and bikers. It's a must-read for parents to share with their children. This is a solid page turner.

Amazing insight in to a world that very few of us inhabit. Yet for a couple hours thought I had.

I loved this story. It may be intended for the young reader, but there are great lessons in here for all of us. Wonderful examples of the rewards of giving, compassion, dreams and perseverance are presented in a flowing, easy-to-read style. I highly recommend this for both the educational and home setting.
