Overview

Hired to find a visiting Chicago millionaire missing in Los Angeles, private investigator Chico Cervantes embarks on a real Phoenix of a case; each time the Latino detective thinks he's finished it off, it rises again to confound him. It isn't long before he finds Benjamin Sterling's murdered body in the tycoon's room in a posh hotel. But the man's face wounds make identification difficult, and Sterling's daughter insists - and proves - that it is not her father, although it was obviously intended to be taken as him. Benjamin Sterling soon turns up alive and well. He's been living in a city park with a congregation of homeless men. The millionaire wants to fund a project to relieve homelessness; to get it off the ground, he wanted first-hand experience of the lifestyle. Although no one knows who killed the stand-in, who turns out to be one of the city's homeless, Sterling plucks an associate from among the men. Julio Alviero is a genial Mexican-American small-time con man whom Sterling takes back to Chicago with him as a "consultant." For who is more able to advise on what will work and what won't than someone straight from the streets? Except that when the real Benjamin Sterling is found dead, his "consultant" is arrested and Chico is once again on the move, this time to Chicago to extricate his friend from the toils of the law and uncover a very persistent killer.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Cook ( Death as a Career Move ) weaves strands of the fourth Antonio ``Chico'' Cervantes case rope-tight and ties them off with equal expertise. In what he calls ``sort of a missing persons job,'' the L.A. ex-cop, now a private detective, is hired to find 70-year-old Benjamin Sterling, a missing Chicago businessman in whose L.A. hotel room another man was shot to death. A few days later the elderly executive turns up in the company of homeless Julio Alviera, a high school acquaintance of Cervantes; Sterling, who has conceived of a way to help Chicago's homeless, was doing some research in the field. Sterling and Alviera return to Chicago, leaving Cervantes to deal with the false accusation that he's behind the blackmail scheme plaguing a Mexican actress he had lived with before she became a TV star. News that Sterling has been killed draws Cervantes to the Windy City to help out Alviera who has been charged with murder. Cook's consideration of homelessness and ethnicity are carried forward by lots of action, a well-turned plot and robust characters. (May)

Rich, seventysomething Chicago businessman Benjamin Sterling is bored with his empty life, so he takes off for L.A. to find himself. Convinced a cause could help justify his existence, he decides on homelessness. Meanwhile, back in Chicago, Sterling's rich-witch daughter is frantic to find Dear Old Dad before he gives his millions away to L.A.'s down-and-outs. She hires Latino detective Chico Cervantes to track Daddy down, but when Chico visits the fancy-schmancy L.A. hotel where Sterling's staying, he finds an unidentified corpse in Sterling's room. And that's just the start of the excitement. Sterling hooks up with Chico's old high-school pal, Julio, now one of L.A.'s homeless, who promises to show Sterling how the downtrodden live at the "sidewalk Hilton." When Julio and Sterling return to Chicago, Sterling is murdered, Julio is charged with the crime, and it's up to Chico to find out who "really" killed Sterling. Plenty of surprises, a tricky plot, a few laughs, high-spirited action, and Cook's savvy, wise-cracking detective make for good entertainment.
