Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michelle H. Martin
A warning on the front cover states, "This Book Contains Math-And It's FUN!" Sure enough, it provides an entertaining, mathematical look at a story that most children know. Telling his tale in a conversational tone, the narrator immediately instructs the reader not to confuse this Goldie Locks with her great-great-grandmother, Goldilocks. For Goldilocks lived "once upon a time," but "Our Goldie Locks lives right now." Not having learned from her famous ancestor, however, Goldie Locks enters a strange house and explores and discovers different geometrical shapes. The author has reconstructed the fairy tale around math concepts and activities. The prefatory "Note to Parents" suggests that parents participate in the reading and learning process. In the follow-up suggestions for using the activities, the authors say that while leading children to find right answers is not the goal of the book, getting them to discuss the ideas within the text is. Maccarone and Burns' efforts make geometry concepts, which many students don't encounter until high school, available to kindergartners.
