The Silver Whistle

The Silver Whistle

by Ann Tompert, Beth Peck (Illustrator)

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 1-3 Miguel is set in his determination to sell the clay whistles that he makes and purchase a silver one to present at the shrine of the Infant on Christmas Day. Due to his kind heart, he finds himself divested of funds and is left with only a clumsy clay whistle, the first he ever made, to present. Yet it is this gift that earns the place of honor at the shrine, and the special favor of the Infant. This Christmas story, set in Mexico, is sweet without being saccharine, but the straightforward telling lacks dramatic punch. Peck's ink and watercolor illustrations are workmanlike but uninspired. Still, for collections that need books on Christmas customs, this is worth consideration. Ann Welton, Lake Dollof Elementary School, Auburn, Wash.
