The Singing Detective [2003]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Tim Sendra
The Singing Detective soundtrack gathers together a rocking line-up of rockabilly, pop, and R&B classics from the '50's. The disc has a mix of ballads, like Gene Vincent's raw "In My Dreams," Johnnie Ray's "Just Walking in the Rain," and the Chordettes' baby powder smooth "Mr. Sandman," along with jumping rockers like the Coasters "Poison Ivy," Big Joe Turner's rollicking "Flip, Flop and Fly," and Danny & the Juniors "At the Hop." It also picks some lesser-known songs by big artists, like Eddie Cochran's "Three Steps to Heaven," Gene Vincent's strutting "Woman Love," and adds the unknown Kalin Twins "When" for good measure. This variety of artists, and the ...

It also picks some lesser-known songs by big artists, like Eddie Cochran's "Three Steps to Heaven," Gene Vincent's strutting "Woman Love," and adds the unknown Kalin Twins "When" for good measure. This variety of artists, and the willingness to look outside the accepted canon of '50's classics for great songs, makes this better than your usual run-of-the-mill 50's derived soundtrack. Plus, you know any movie that has "Harlem Nocturne" in it is bound to have at least one good scene. As a "bonus" the last track of the disc features the movie's star, Robert Downey Jr., groaning his way through a modern version of Gene Vincent's "In My Dreams." The arrangement is stiff and very Adult Contemporary, and the actor would be well-served to stick to his day job. It is, unfortunately, a lame ending for such an otherwise enjoyable collection. [The disc also comes with a bonus DVD that features a video for Downey's version of "In My Dreams."]

    in my dreams

I just read the previous article and I definitely disagree. I am a huge Robert Downey Jr. fan and his singing is remarkable. This is a must for all fans and they are songs that Dennis Potter (The Singing Detective) wanted in the movie. It is an excellent cd and the bonus dvd is amazing.

    Great Ending!

From what I've heard of "In My Dreams" sung by Robert Downey Jr., I am very pleasantly surprised at the great mellow, sexy tone that only adds to the ending of the movie!
