Overview

It took Depeche Mode only four years to assemble their first singles compilation, but 12 to assemble The Singles 86>98. Appropriately, the second set was much more ambitious than The Singles 81>85, spanning two discs and 20 songs, plus a live version of "Everything Counts." The Singles 86>98 was an album that many fans, both casual and hardcore, waited patiently for, and for good reason -- Depeche Mode were always more effective as a singles band than as album artists. That's not to say that the double-disc compilation is perfect. DM's output fluctuated wildly during those 12 years, as the group hit both career highs and lows. It's possible to hear it all on this set, from "Strangelove" and "Never Let Me Down Again," through "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence," to "I Feel You" and "Barrel of a Gun." It's possible that some casual listeners will find that the collection meanders a bit too much for their tastes, but the end result is definitive and, along with The Singles 81>85, ranks as Depeche Mode's best, most listenable album.

Depeche Mode is probably the best techno band ever, at least in my opinion. They have had tons of hits, and here are several of them. This is a 2 cd set, on the first cd is 8 super popular hits. The second disc has fewer huge hits, but the songs evolve to being better musically, and have become very impressive electronica. It is always nice to see a band which was a predecessor to a genre show the bands within it how its done. It's No Good is incredible, as in Barrel of a Gun. The first 10 tracks speak for themselves, as everyone age 10-60 has probably heard and enjoyed them.

If you already own all Depeche Mode discs you still need this one. The remastered is a major sound improvement. I compared my 1993 purchase of Songs of Faith and Devotion with this disc. The same songs sound so much better on the 86-98 singles due to digitial remastered!!! If you have a decent stereo system/speakers this cd is worth the expense--think of it as an extension to your system. If you are a dm fan this is worth it. If you aren't a dm fan you will be after listening to these two cd's. Buying this is also cheaper than buying all the songs on $0.88 downloads from WalMart.com

This double cd is packed with great DM tunes! On disc 1 I liked Stripped which was soulful and dark. Your imagination will run wild!! And on Policy of Truth you will find your head bobbing in time with Dave's words!! On disc 2, Little 15 is sad but soulful. And Home, sung by Martin, with his bedroom eyes, you will find yourself singing along with each word. Keep up the good work DM!! Can't wait to hear upcoming tracks from DM!! A devouted returning DM fan from the 80's!!

I cannot say enough about this band. Not only are the lyrics beautiful and haunting, the music is simply brilliant. It seems that Martin Gore has a knack for putting the right words with the right music. On top of all that, they have David Gahan whose voice can move you in ways you'd never thought. It seems as if the combination of these two people was preordained. I hope this band continues to surprise and amaze their fans as they always have. I for one, look forward to many, many years of good, exciting, fresh music from DM. They have been around for over 20 years. That says a lot in a world full of one-hit wonders.
