Editorial Reviews

ALA Booklist
Praise for The Six Crowns: Trundle’s Quest:“Filled with diverse animal villains and allies and plenty of clashing action, this series-launcher evoke elements of both Redwall and Lord of the Rings.”
Children's Literature - Magi Evans
According to legend, there was once a land ruled by six wise hedgehogs, each wearing a crown made of a different material. An explosion tore the world into thousands of floating islands, called the Sundered Lands. Hedgehogs Trundle Boldoak and Esmerelda Lightfoot have been on a quest to collect the six crowns referenced in a prophecy. Accompanied by minstrel rabbit Jack Nimble, they have collected four crowns, while being pursued by the pirate Grizzletusk. At the beginning of this fifth book in the “Six Crowns” series, the questers’ airship has become trapped in a morass of shipwrecks. With their propeller broken, they leave their ship to forage for a new one, and are beset by hungry lizards. Although a group of steam moles saves them, they are then imprisoned until they agree to help the steam moles build their opera house, an ongoing boondoggle overseen by Count Leopold, a befuddled lion who is writing an opera that the moles hope to perform. Esmerelda, seeing that nothing is really getting done, quickly takes over the building project while Trundle is assigned to put order to the many pages of opera that are strewn all over the Count’s tower office. Thanks to their efforts, the opera is performed, but at the end the moles are attacked by an army of dogs, along with the lizards. Leaving Jack behind at his own request, Trundle and Esmerelda escape, but not before accidentally finding the crown they were looking for in a prop room in the opera house. This cute animal fantasy, with delightfully humorous illustrations, has cliffhanger chapter endings and just enough adventure and danger to thrill its intended elementary school audience. Reviewer: Magi Evans; Ages 8 to 12.
