If you're a fan of the genre and love reading a master who knows the technology you'll absolutely adore this novel. There is nothing else out there that compares to this depiction of what would have happened if the Cold War had gone hot at sea. Tillman puts all the ships, aircraft, and weapons of the period into a massive furball lasting hundreds of pages. The story takes place shortly after the break up of the USSR and a new totalitarian gov't is bent on invading South Africa with its N. Korean, Vietnamese, and other allies. An American battle group with an MEU happens to be in the area to respond. What ensues is a dazzling display of a Cold War era war at sea as both sides punch, feint, block, and counter punch. You get to watch, ring side, as cruise missiles fly toward enemy warships desperately firing chaff and gattling guns; S-3s armed with low yield nukes pursue deep diving SSGNs; SU-27s, Mig-29s, Helix Helos, Seahawks, F-18s, A-6s, and E-2Cs encounter each other in repeated duels. Land based air also has its role. It's all here with insights into tactics, sensor systems, weapons systems, et al without slowing the pace of the novel. If you want a modern day slug fest at sea get this novel and plan on spending the whole weekend with it. 10 stars. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
