Overview

This self-teaching guide to the colorful world of American slang and idiom is an essential text for nonnative speakers, teachers of English as a second language, or anyone interested in the nuances of colloquial speech. Dialogues, word games, crossword puzzles, word matches, true & false exercises, and other innovative techniques are used to familiarize readers with common terms and illustrate how they are used in a variety of contexts, such as at a restaurant, at the movies, at school, etc. Sections on "real speak" show students the shortcuts in pronunciation-"gonna," "should'a"-that make even familiar phrases difficult to follow. Illustrations depicting the literal interpretation of each term ("to run a fever" shows a marathon runner on the back of a thermometer with the mercury ready to explode) can be used as teaching tools or mnemonic devices.

As one of thousands of English teachers over here in Japan, I'm always on the look out for anything whatsoever to help me communicate to my students better. Personally, I find most textbooks out on the market today a bit dry and rather (how shall I put this?) confined--in the sense that what you're getting is truly 'textbook English'. Street Speak, formally known as Street Talk, is one of the best buys you could make as a teacher of ESL. It makes learning slang not only fun but easy with it's wonderfully amusing, hand drawn cartoons by Ty Semaka, insightful tips on some of your more obscure grammatical points, dialogues highlighting the significant differences in 'real speak' as opposed to 'textbook English,' and much much more. You would think from reading this they paid me to say such things. Well, nothing could be further from the truth. I've been using the older addition, Street Talk, in a few of my classes these past months and I have to say it makes for a refreshing change from the video and grammar lessons I usually do. There is one final thing I'd like to add, before I forget, and it's for Mr. Burke (if he happens to be reading this). Please please reconsider reprinting the Street Speak series in color. Black and white just doesn't do it justice.
