Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Treadway M.Ed.
Presented in an offbeat and humorous way, this title helps students learn assorted details about every state in America. Whatever the home state and ages of readers, the eclectic approach captures youngsters' attention and brings them back for more through an engaging method of expanding their level of trivial knowledge as well as providing a resource for appealing games, inspiration, and other activities. The nation is divided into general sections of The Left Side, The Middle Middle, The Middle (sort of), The Lower Right, and The Upper Right as shown on a nicely colored map with a "trail" that begins in Maine and concludes in Hawaii. Guided by lists in the State Finder, travelers can focus on a broad view of the country while delving into specifics. The overall jazzy format, multiple font styles and colors, bold layout, and lively appearance could be off-putting, but the Klutz group does not take themselves or topics so seriously that readers come away with anything short of an exhilarating trip. Subjects can be silly while being effectively taught when presented using new or unexpected methods. Readers cannot resist becoming engaged when states are portrayed in unique shapes, such as Wisconsin's Swiss cheese, Oregon's tree rings, Iowa's corn-on-the-cob, Ohio's trademark Etch A Sketch screen, Pennsylvania's chocolate bar, South Dakota's Mount Rushmore, Virginia's Civil War photograph, Florida's orange slice, Nevada's blue neon outline, or Missouri's painted scene of Huckleberry Finn fishing along a river bank. Pages invoke a feel of artwork collage as local textures, materials, natural resources, and creative design highlight features about each state. There are cultural icons as well as historic figures among Our Favorite and Most Famous persons. In addition, weather, geography, events, traditions, national and international feats, and other trivia are included. At book's end, there are answers to games and activities along with funny Acknowledgements, Can't Get Enough?, More Great Books from Klutz, and Art Credits. Readers are invited to "explore the USA the KLUTZ way!" Reviewer: Susan Treadway, M.Ed.
