Barnes & Noble - Jon Dolan
Imagine a cross between Snoop Dogg and Buddy Holly and you've got Eminem -- post-gangsta rap's great white dork. With a wicked tongue, rhyme skills that would stun John Donne, and a flow that suggests Lenny and Squiggy more than Mike D or MCA, this son of the mean streets of urban Detroit might be the best white rapper of all time. His Dr. Dre-produced debut is a confrontational, offensive, undeniably funny update on the usual shock-rap shtick. On cuts like "My Name Is," "My Fault," and his hilariously grim response to Will Smith's "Just the Two of Us" "'97 Bonnie & Clyde" his wit, imagery, and brilliant sense of comedic irony are unprecedented. Dre's production is hands off -- this is Em's show, folks -- and a little more musical richness might have made these 20 cuts fly by a bit quicker. Still, taken in regular doses, a few choice cuts at a time, this is the hip-hop breakthrough of 1999.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Given his subsequent superstardom, culminating in no less than an Academy Award, it may be easy to overlook exactly how demonized Eminem was once his mainstream debut album, The Slim Shady LP, grabbed the attention of pop music upon its release in 1999. Then, it wasn't clear to every listener that Eminem was, as they say, an unreliable narrator, somebody who slung satire, lies, uncomfortable truths, and lacerating insights with vigor and venom, blurring the line between reality and parody, all seemingly without effort. The Slim Shady LP bristles with this tension, since it's never always clear when Marshall Mathers is joking and when he's dead serious. This was unsettling in 1999, when nobody knew his back-story, and years later, when his personal turmoil is public knowledge, it still can be unsettling, because his words and delivery are that powerful. Of course, nowhere is this more true than on "97 Bonnie and Clyde," a notorious track where he imagines killing his wife and then disposing of the body with his baby daughter in tow. There have been more violent songs in rap, but few more disturbing, and it's not because of what it describes, it's how he describes it -- how the perfectly modulated phrasing enhances the horror and black humor of his words. Eminem's supreme gifts are an expansive vocabulary and vivid imagination, which he unleashes with wicked humor and unsparing anger in equal measure. The production -- masterminded by Dr. Dre but also helmed in large doses by Marky and Jeff Bass, along with Marshall himself -- mirrors his rhymes, with their spare, intricately layered arrangements enhancing his narratives, which are always at the forefront. As well they should be -- there are few rappers as wildly gifted verbally as Eminem. At a time when many rappers were stuck in the stultifying swamp of gangsta clich├ęs, Eminem broke through the hardcore murk by abandoning the genre's familiar themes and flaunting a style with more verbal muscle and imagination than any of his contemporaries. Years later, as the shock has faded, it's those lyrical skills and the subtle mastery of the music that still resonate, and they're what make The Slim Shady LP one of the great debuts in both hip-hop and modern pop music.

    Deliciously sinister and dark.

On this album, Eminem know how to get his word out about how angry he is and how dark he thinks. The only special thing about that is, he doesn't use screaming to release his anger, instead, he takes a more playful-sounding approach to it which is very disturbing, yet funny at the same time. Eminem is a very angry person, but his tone of voice makes him sound like someone who's playful. Unlike on the Marshal Mathers LP, Eminem sounds calm, subtle, and fun-loving, yet disturbing and dark at the same time. Whether it's talking about his mother, DeAngelo Bailey, or Kurt Cobain shooting himself (on track 13), Eminem remains sinister with a dash of humor.

    Still Battling

This album is better than a lot of the 'New-Em-fans' give it credit for. U can really hear his roots as a battle-MC coming through with his humour and cynicism for modern day life. Em in his prime still rhyming about stuff we can all relate to like poverty, parties and alcohol. Don't get me wrong, it's two successors are great and lyrically more adventurous but this is so much more funny. ;)

    Hilarious, brilliant, inventive; Eminem rules.

The Slim Shady LP is a brilliant feast of pefectly crafted rhymes over irresistible, bouncing beats. This sounds better and better each time you hear it; the consisitently brilliant rhymes are mind-blowing; Eminem is the most talented rapper on the planet; only a select few in history match up to his skills. He has brought rap to new heights; everyone should have a copy of this (and the Marshall Mathers LP, of course).

Eminem : the fourth greatest emcee ever !

''The Slim Shady LP'' is one of the dopest rap albums in a long time. Eminem (a.k.a Slim Shady) brings you dope, crazy, funny and outstanding lyrics that will make u listen over and over again. With only 2 guest appearences from Dr. Dre & Royce da 5'9'' and production from mark & jeff bass, Dr.Dre and Eminem himself, ''The Slim Shady LP'' is a must for every rap fan !

    Love it or hate it...

You either love Eminem or you hate him, but no matter what, you have to respect his music, his talent and his honesty. His lyrics are the most amazing and honest words out there today. That's what some people can't handle..the truth being shoved down their throat. This is a great album, honest, funny and great music to jam to. You go Eminem..keep doin what your doin.

    Attention Parents

I think Eminem has the best songs because he's not afraid to speak his mind. He can write about whatever hes thinkin' and it will turn out to be a good song. He may use bad language and everything that parents don't like but the things he says are true and may be bad but he's the only rapper that truely express his feelings without having trouble doing so. I just love that imagination on him and everybody (parent exspecially)should really listen to the songs that show the good gualities in him.

The Slim Shady LP Lets Us Into The Mind OF Marshall Mathers

The Slim Shady LP is the freshman release from the talented artist Eminem. The lyrics are blunt and maybe offensive to some. The content of the album were critized for violence, profanity, and many other things. I enjoyed the way his personal experiences were portrayed. So what if he may have offended mothers or homosexuals? They don't have to listen to it, or buy the CD. Kids should be inspired by their parents not a rap artist, so why put blame or cause on a CD when something goes wrong? The CD was great in my opinion and The Slim Shady LP is something that a lot of us can relate to. The lyrical content lets a lot of us into the mind of Marshall Mathers.

I think he has what it takes to be one of the best MC's every to hit the stage and this is comin from a true, keep it real type brother

Slim shady LP is definitley tight. I thought when I first heard his song, that he will be just another Vanilla Ice. But he proved me wrong. His album shows versitility and skill. Keep up the work Slim, you have my support and my grammy for rapper of the year.

    eminem rules!!!!

i loved this cd tha second i got it in my cd player and heard it. almost every song is funny, distasteful, and SICK (i wouldn't have it any other way). it's not like other rap cds, relying on other people to rap for them. he only has like 3-5 songs with other people rapping on them. it's one of tha best cd's i have, and tha artwork in tha cd insert is really cool too

    Straight outta da Trailer Park

Comes the man Eminem and his off da hook debut Slim Shady LP. This is one of the best debut albums I have ever heard. It is up there with DMX, Snoop Dogg, and of course the Chronic. Forget about the skin color just listen to the lyrics and you'll forget he's white. Tracks to listen to: Brain Damage, I just don't give a f#@k, Come on everybody, role model, and the best track 97' Bonnie & Clyde.
