Overview

Built around Britney Spears' new single "Ooh La La," a likable yet forgettable synth pop confection with electro-folk flourishes that for some reason required the talents of seven writers, the non-orchestral version of the Smurfs 2 soundtrack, billed as "Music from and Inspired By," features ten relentlessly upbeat selections from contemporary pop artists, none of which manage to capture the dark, unholy menace that is Gargamel and his mean orange tabby Azrael. Bereft of composer Heitor Pereira's jaunty score, highlights include new cuts from feisty electro-poppers Owl City ("Live It Up") and up-and-coming Oklahoma-based singer/songwriter Cady Groves ("Forget You"). The collection concludes with a dancefloor-ready re-imagining of Right Said Fred's 1991 smash "I'm Too Sexy" called "I'm Too Smurfy" performed by none other than Right Said Fred. ~ James Christopher Monger
