Six wintry smurfisodes making their first appearances on this side of the Atlantic feature the usual cast of blue-skinned gnomes and their hapless nemesis, Gargamel. A story of one Christmas Eve that Gargamel nearly ruins by hijacking Santa's sleigh and another in which he actually receives some gifts bookend the collection. In between, Papa Smurf uses a book of Nostrasmurfus prophecies to trick an illiterate troll; animate snowpeople inadvertently lead Gargamel to the Smurfs' village but then save it; Lazy Smurf nods off with a hibernating dormouse, both of whom are rescued from a hunter; and Lumberjack Smurf battles a dragon to save an elf who has been turned into a talking Christmas tree. Even young eyes may strain to make out the small, if bright blue, figures and cramped lines of dialogue in the sequential panels. Furthermore, not only does Gargamel come in for a wince-worthy amount of physical and emotional abuse, but Papa Smurf ends up burning his book. Still, the tales have at least nostalgic value, and the plots are not only lickety-split but well-supplied with altered but recognizable holiday songs ("Santa Claus is smurfing to town…") and other quips. Grinch-weary readers in particular may be smurfertained. (Graphic stories. 6-8)

Meet the Author

PIERRE CULLIFORD, born in Belgium June 25, 1928, was a cartoonist known as Peyo. We can consider ourselves lucky! After Peyo left school in Brussels, he looked in the paper for a job. Two caught his eye: offers for a dental assistant and an illustrator. When he presented himself to the dentist, he was told he was just 15 minutes too late! At the time, Belgium was a hothouse of comic strip artists. Peyo quickly found himself working with some of the most talented, amongst them characters such as his lifelong writing partner Yvan Delporte.

After struggling for some time, he eventually got the break he deserved when he started working for "Le Journal de Spirou." Johan and Peewit were amongst his most popular characters. But in 1958, the Smurfs made their first appearance and went on to become the world-famous characters we now know. Although most cartoon characters are known through their books before becoming TV characters, the opposite was true of the Smurfs in North America.

Papercutz is proud to bring the original Smurfs comics back into print in North America. The United States has finally caught up with the rest of the world in recognizing that comics are a true art form, and that the Smurfs graphic novels are classics. Between the release of the SMURFS graphic novels and two new feature films, the Smurfs are ready to conquer North America all over again! And that's just smurfy!

When Gargamel (who has been very bad, as normal) is ordered to deliver the Smurfs’ Christmas presents to their tree (where Santa usually hangs their presents) outside of the forest by Santa, or else Gargamel will be turned into a worm, the Smurfs find some kindness in their hearts to bring Gargamel, their supreme enemy, some presents themselves! This is a very cute Papercutz Smurf Graphic Novel. I like the other comics (bonus adventures) in it too, at the back. The snowman one was nice. :) The Smurfs are always good for a quick, funny read on a sunny or a rainy day! I think reluctant readers will love this Graphic Novel series! *NOTE I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
