Children's Literature - Susan R. Shaffner
Smurfs are little blue creatures, all males except for Smurfette, who is sad because she thinks no one remembered her Smurfday. (Birthday. Take just about any word and substitute “smurf” for one of the syllables and you will find the secret to Smurf language.) The Smurfs’ arch enemy, Gargamel, is in Paris and wants Papa Smurf’s recipe for making Smurfs so he can create all the Smurfs he wants and steal their Smurf essence. He has created two naughty creatures named Vexy and Hackus to travel through a portal at the top of the Eiffel tower to capture Smurfette. The Smurfs all fly to Paris in time to see Smurfette free herself from captivity. Gargamel gives Smurfette a magic wand for her birthday and she looks happy, which depresses the Smurfs. Instead of celebrating Smurfette’s birthday, however, Gargamel takes her and the two Naughties to his underground lair and threatens to hurt the Naughties if Smurfette does not tell him Papa Smurf’s formula for making Smurfs. The Smurfs travel through drains to smurf Gargamel’s Smurfalator so it would not work, and rescue Smurfette who in turn rescues Vexy and Hackus. They all happily return to Smurf Village. This book is based on the Smurf cartoon series, and children who are avid watchers may find it easy to follow the plot. The rest of us, however, may find it inane and confusing as to the names and roles of the humans, why Gargamel is the enemy and why he would want Smurf essence. Aside from the words “Eiffel Tower,” there is little in the book having to do with Paris. The many “smurfwords” could possibly be used for making guesses from context clues. Reviewer: Susan R. Shaffner; Ages 4 to 8.
