Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Karen Leggett
Elegant illustrations and sparkling silver snowflakes bring alive this less well known folk tale by Hans Christian Andersen. Originally published in 1982, this reprint will find new appeal among readers who are discovering and re-discovering C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia. The world of the Snow Queen is similarly exquisite but treacherous and it takes the faith of young Gerda to find and rescue her brother Kai from the Snow Queen's icy grasp. This title is a long and complex narrative, too long for a nightly read aloud, though it could become a seasonal favorite because of its artistic beauty, suspense, and sheer fantasy. Notions of time, logic, and reality are blown to the wind, but there is joy (and a lesson in morality and ethics) in Gerda's innocence and loyalty to her brother. Several full- and double-page illustrations draw the reader in with the detail of Scandinavian folk art next to marvelously swirling ice storms and more delicate snowflakes.
