Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Badea-Paun (coauthor, Monarhi Europeni: Marile Modele) devotes most of this work to large and lavish reproductions of portraits crossing national boundaries and dating from the early 19th century through World War II (most are from the late 1800s). In his study of contemporary culture and the society of the time, he draws connections between artists and writers and highlights the status and increased accessibility of travel by train and ship. Represented through the media of painting, drawing, and photography (with Andy Warhol's silk screens in between) are both serious and satirical depictions of adults, children, dogs, and horses. Among the portraits omitted are three of this reviewer's favorites of Sarah Bernhardt (by Alfonse Mucha), Austro-Hungarian Empress Elizabeth (Franz Xavier Winterhalter), and Isabella Stewart Gardner (John Singer Sargent). But because of the exquisite portraits and witty, gossipy stories about the sitters and contemporary glitterati, these omissions are forgiven. Sargent's great-nephew, Richard Ormond (former director, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich), writes the preface. Recommended for larger public, academic, and special libraries.
