2nd Edition

One moment Riley Murrough is living a normal life working in a coffee shop, and the next he's running for his life from demons, learns he bears the mark of a shape-shifter king from a magical realm, and--worst of all--he's destined to become the mated prince to the arrogant tiger shifter he would rather strangle.

Khalon, the shifter king, is equally distraught at the idea of being bound to a human prince, and along with his Soldati warriors, he sets out to return Riley to his own world where he belongs. On their journey they might discover why the priestess brought them together--if they can escape the demons and make it to her alive.

I absolutely freaking adore Charlie Cochet. Her books have kept me from being lonely many, many, many times, so I was excited to see the beginning of a new series. Based on the description it sure sounds like my cup of tea with shifters, demons, and magic, galore! I can only say that if I'd witnessed what Riley did, I would have needed a lot of alcohol, and possibly some recreational drugs, in order to not freak completely out. I don't know what those things were that came for him, but I definitely can spot a shifter when I see them. Khalon is seriously hot and he's a Soldati king who has been waiting for his prince. Suffice to say he's not thrilled that his prince is human. No Soldati king has ever mated with a human...... he'll be the laughingstock of the whole realm. Not to mention that Riley appears to be weak, not a strong warrior to help Khalon fight and protect the Soldati. “I am Khalon, king of the Soldati, and I am your mate.” Saying the words alone pained him greatly. “Hey, if you want to be friends, that’s cool, but friends don’t kidnap each other or chain each other up. Okay, maybe some do, but why don’t we start small? Maybe grab a cup of coffee instead?” Khalon stopped pacing. “What?” Oh yeah, I was already getting a feel for the way this tale was going to go. Riley is definitely my kind of character. He's snarky, opinionated, mouthy, and loves to tease. I really couldn't blame him, though. How would I react if I was transported into a magical realm that has coexisted next to my human world since time began, and oh yeah, all the monsters they show on tv? They're real, fyi. Well, isn't that interesting what Riley seems able to do...... Don't take my lighthearted banter as an indication that this story isn't well told or not serious. There is quite a bit of drama going on and being with Riley while he learns the history of the Soldati and their realm was as fascinating to me as it was to him. Khalon's council consists of his dearest friends he grew up with: Rayner, Adira, and Ezra. Each of them brings their own uniqueness and abilities to help Khalon with his kingdom. Wow. There is so much going on here and I'm keeping my mouth shut because there's too many spoilers. I laughed and I definitely cried. I can't wait for the next book!
