Overview

On the Quails' third record, it's clear that they won't quit until they see some social reform. Like they did on Atmosphere, the politically aware trio (now with an album on the suitable Mr. Lady and a tour with Sleater-Kinney under their righteous belts) stomps all over the establishment. Here they seem to be a little angrier, protesting and calling for immediate action. Drummer Julianna Bright, guitarist Jen Smith, and bassist Seth Lorinczi don't waste any time on The Song Is Love, cranking out a call to action in opener "More Gender, More of the Time" with the words "our time is now!" From there they shout about sexism and pose many questions. They don't offer enough answers, but the Quails best sum up their solution in "Power" with "Love is the only chance we get/love is our only weapon left." Pressing for change, even in the surprisingly anti-folk "The War Will Be Over When We Want It," the San Francisco trio no doubt has its punk rock claws in a progressive place.
